I've never played pokemon but gawd darn if I know how ridiculous it can be to think of 150+ original names!  And Sony is obviously using people in a "business" fashion to get more of them PS4s built lol the fools!

Forced labor, hahaha. Hilarious, at least it's engineering students, not like child slave labor, but hey, nobody complains about their Nikes, why complain about students making something for a degree?

Am I the only one worried about faulty PS4 launch units from this news?

"Today a report has come out saying over 1,000 Chinese students are being made to manufacture PS4s in order to graduate."

I laughed.

"It is all well within guidelines and regulations" said Foxconn only moments before announcing that each student will receive a free cap and gown for graduation after picking only 15 bales of cotton on the compound's plantation.

if you own anything by Apple, Acer, Dell, Hewlett Pacard, Motorola, Nokia, Toshiba, Nintendo, Microsoft you really shouldn't be throwing your shit sticks at Sony.

it might be wrong but sadly it's nothing new,

they've all use Foxconn

How many students will it need to change this horrid new website back to normal?

Good for Sony - get those PS4's built!!

Much more sympathetic to those trying to come up with names for new Pokemon - a thankless task if ever there was one!

Sucks that their is no international law to stop this modern day slavery. The reality is however that the economies that have tanked over the years in the manufacturing sector is because of China and the fact that people get paid little to nothing or in this case with Sony nothing to make products we use everyday. This encourages the big corporations to move most manufacturing jobs over to china.

I can't say I'm really surprised by this. It's just sad that these students are being taken advantage of. An internship? Who are they trying to kid. Thank god I'm from North America.

I'm not comfortable with Sony using free student labor to construct the PS4.  Students typically do a terrible job when paid--such as the half-assed effort they put into making my salted caramel mocha I bought this morning from the campus Starbucks.  I can tell they forgot the extra shot of espresso I requested.  Anyway, early adopters are certain to be disappointed with the build quality of first run PS4s. Filthy students.

Let's get real here. Assembling PS4s probably teaches them more about engineering than fetching sandwiches and coffee so not super unfair apart from overtime. It's more unfair against the potential workers that are left unemployed because some intern was doing the job instead. THAT is the real issue here.

I'd love to say that I helped assemble the PS4.  But that's just me.

There are so many things going on With the new gamespot. It makes me feel dizzy....

Anyway, I dont care if chinese students are forced to do PS4. They should increase the numbers from 1000 to 10000000000000.  Wait how many chinese students are there in China anyway? 10000000000000 seems a lot lesser that the real number

Welcome to the desert of real world internships. Lame, for sure. But as lame as borrowing 30 G to attend university, only to learn that after graduating, there's only low-paid service jobs? Or working at Foxconn's prison industrial complex all your life? The Western educational system is geared towards shielding its youth from the grim realities of work for as long as possible. Who's to say a shitty internship doesn't teach you something valuable about work in general? Perhaps you have a misguided conception of what 'work' entails. Do you really think future employers have your personal development in mind when they hire you?

Ayato_Kamina_1
Ayato_Kamina_1

Come on people, okay so the internship isn't offering a fascinating and engaging role to its students, but you're making this sound like they're being asked to work 16 hours in a sweatshop. Packing PS4s in an assembly line? Okay it's not ideal for them, but it's work that needs to be done for their degree. Get it done, finish your degree, move on.

Kraken422
Kraken422

As an engineering student I just want to get my 3-months of industry experience so that I can complete my degree. That being said I'd prefer real experience, packing PS4s doesn't prepare anyone for the real work force.

What really makes them cry is running out of ideas for new pokemon that don't involve making them take after objects!, we might start seeing a whole home of pokemon furniture. :)

If ppl want to work for free, then let em :)

I'd have thought in the world that has cars being mass produced by robots a small black box with some electronics inside it would be possible without thousands of workers. I guess I was wrong.

@Jasper_73 I found it was my adblock plus that was the issue, had to disable on gamespot. "cha ching" ;)

It might be (Ad Block Plus), I disabled it in Chrome browser and videos started working again.

@kgallis21 You'd be surprised how many electronics manufacturers use Foxconn labor.

kgallis21

@Dilandau88 ahh bad news but we do the same thing in America. I've done internship in IT in which the interns was making company untold amount of money off of their interns by building programs. A lot of companies sadly do this practice.

@killjoi Microsoft uses Foxconn as well, so does Apple, Samsung, etc. It's fucked up, but it's not just Sony, and I wouldn't be any more worried about faulty units as I would be about anything now days, because almost everything you buy is being made by unpaid workers in some foreign land.

Darth_Aloysius

@killjoi I don't think your taking into account that they are Chinese.

You'll find people aren't so lazy outside of the West.

@grommmmmm Internships aren't meant for you to "pay your dues" or learn how to work hard - they are meant to teach you skills specific to the business sector you will be working in. What could engineer students be learning at a factory where they package and do physical labor all day?

vwolf2
vwolf2

@grommmmmm I like the way you think, sir. That describes exactly what hell I'm going through right now, I'm just extremely lucky I got the job I have now before I graduated from college or I'd be a lot worse off. At this point though I think I'd rather be packing ps4's at least I'd get to touch the damn things.

Ayato_Kamina_1
Ayato_Kamina_1

@Kraken422 Well when you're applying for an actual job afterwards, that's where you display your creativity when you say what you "did" at your internship. Hint : Your prospective employers don't need to know that you made all your employers tea and coffee.

Finding work is hard enough, so long as you've got some experience to put down, you can highlight the marketable things you did there (working to deadlines, working in a team etc etc.)

Scorpion1813
Scorpion1813

@Dannystaples14

The workers were packing them into boxes. Cars don't get packed into boxes.

The construction of the console itself was most likely done by machines. Packing like that is usually done by people, even in factories where everything else is done by machines.

@prodigy_69 @Jasper_73 thanks i dont suppose there may be a way to disable adblock just for this site? its annoying to have to go into my settings every time i visit.

razama
razama

@kgallis21 @Dilandau88 I think that is a bit different. Some companies may abuse interns, but most people learn things while they are interning. In this case, college students were doing physical labor and learning nothing but how to pack boxes and lift things.

@cousinmerl @LordCrash88 Pfff, then goodbye...

I won't watch a 30 seconds commercial prior to any video here. I'll watch the stuff on YT instead and quit commenting here.... :(

@adrianjarcalol I was kinda expecting there'd be an outburst of hate somewhere on the site, but with such horrid layout I lost will to look for it X_x

Kraken422
Kraken422

@Ayato_Kamina_1 @Kraken422 The issue is I would not be receiving the experience I should be. If you're an intern who doesn't know shit it's okay because you're an intern; if you're a graduate who doesn't know shit it's.... still okay, they expect us graduates to know fuck all. But still!!! Rage!

Actually for me it only counts if it's payed work so the comparison was probably a bad one.

@Jasper_73 @prodigy_69 left click on the ab symbol on the far right of your address bar and there should be an option with a checkmark box that says enable for this site. Uncheck it and should stop working for the gamespot domain. Do this on the homepage for gamespot though just to be safe.

@razama In this case? They shouldn't go to Foxconn then, name a major electronics company, they've used Foxconn labor recently. Including Microsoft.

@LordCrash88 @cousinmerl i know it sucks but i guess they need to make money with advertising - its the future Futurama predicted when they decide to visit the internet with VR goggles...
