GS News - Microsoft Lays Off 18,000; Destiny Beta Not 1080p On Xbox One
Bungie defends Destiny beta’s lower resolution on Xbox One, huge layoffs hit Microsoft and Xbox, and Xbox One sales double after Kinect removal.

Terrible news about layoffs no doubt Steven Elop the most incompetent CEO in history will have a safe job now he has stolen Nokia for Microsoft.
1080p mean nothing to me. I have ps4 and xbox one but still getting it on xbox one... I am playing the beta on my ps4 tho and its pretty good. Definitely over hyped IMO and the fact its the first Bungie game to grace a playstation console is more likely why the hype is there. Its the biggest game the ps4 has this year so of course Sony is going to hype it.
As for Xbox Ones doubled sales, kinda figured that would happen. As a gamer who owns all consoles and after E3 I'm not sure what is causing people to buy PS4 so much? I like the console but nothing on it right now screams "BUY ME"... IMO Xbox One just has better games right now so that plus its features are worth the purchase. Xbox One needed Halo MCC to release on June 9th when the console went to $399. I mean MS should have at least released something to entice people to buy the $399 console on June 9th instead of waiting until November....
@skiggy34 Why? I mean most Xone exclusives are ending up on PC so the way i see it get gamer budget PC and a PS4.
@skiggy34 why would you buy it for the less powerful console? doesn't make any sense, is it the controller you prefer ?
Destiny is nothing new. For the most part - true. However, even the most creative material usually is based on something that was successful. So what if it takes some of the key aspects from Halo... Halo was badass. Not to mention it was Bungie's brainchild - a brainchild that was, more or less, stolen by Microsoft. They took many of the key aspects that made Halo great, threw in some other award winning features from other game titles (not Borderlands - just because it falls into the same category, Shooter/MMO, does not mean it is the same), mixed them together with a touch of new and shiny and made what is and will be one of the biggest games of this year. 1080p or not, its a great game from what everyone can see. Is it perfect? No. But Bungies did well.
@Joe51187 Jess told me you look good today!
I will not change my opinion of Destiny for you haters that post stupid comments. For those how call Destiny a watered down Borderlands clone, I did not get the memo, I did not know Borderlands had a pizza flavored johnson that people liked to suck so much. I dont know anyone that still plays Borderlands 1or2 or says anything good about it ever, while almost everyone I know could not even imagine gaming without the Halo series which invented matchmaking also. BTW, There is such thing as too much looting and Borderlands taught us all that.
You are welcome now go back to having fun the reason we play games to begin with!
It's not 1080p on PS3 either but the game still looks great and I'm having a lot of fun with it, so I don't think it's going to be an issue for X bone owners. I bet it will look great and they will have a lot of fun. Resolution is not the most important thing ever.
HaHa here we go!!!! Destiny not in 1080p!!!!
Let the Flaming begin!!!!
Xbox sales doubled without the Kinect???? I'm no genius (HELL I DON'T EVEN HAVE A COLLEGE DEGREE), and even I could have predicted that one!
@cyberwookie72 lol at college degree in sales.
The final release won't be 1080p on xbox one neither, they are just holding back that disappointing news as to not effect sales and pre orders.
Wow you should play Destiny on PS3 and PS4. Both are amazing.
To the kid with the ignorant comment :
Have you even played Battlefailed 4 because I have never seen a turd like that come out and call itself a game. I traded that social experiment after it erased my SP save the 3rd time and the MP is broken lag crap.
Destiny is the obvious choice over anymore EA experiments unless you like trash online like Battlefailed 4.
You are welcome and remember we all play games for fun. If you're not then find a new hobby please!
Never have had an issue with bf4. Destiny is just another shallow halo shooter diversified across two consoles. It lacks anything real interesting. Although an "inbred", uneducated mongrol like yourself wouldn't see that because you have bungie so far down your little fan boy throat to actually find a quality enjoyable game
@themudgerider i agree its just a crappy Halo Mod as far as im concerned. yeah BF4 had a rough release, but what game doesnt nowadays.
i love BF4 infact its the only game i will play until possibly CoD:AW hits in november, unless it turns out like Ghosts did.. then ill wait for BF5.
I don't game very often but I typically stick to bf4 for multiplayer or black ops 2 . I usually play games that have a story to them. I just wish more developers would go back to making an depth story to a game
@lizardlava ^ someone's got a crush
does anybody know about how Destiny (the actual game not a demo or beta) was suppose to come out last month?
I'm not going to play Destiny. This is just my opinion, but I think the game is just a borderlands clone with a few added features and gimmicks. Its like an MMO without the real depth but some of the added tedium like inventory juggling and itemization (bleh).
I watched the live stream last night and it reminded me a lot of Defiance. I know its probably not really like that and will be a huge hit, if for no other reason than 12 million people with PS4s & X1s starving for a AAA title, but I think its gonna have phony success like WatchDogs. Lots of units moved but not really that great of a game. Hope they prove me wrong
If you enjoy the game thats cool, game on brother. I'm waiting for the more run and gun Evolve.
I'm only going to play the monster I hope it has a ladder.
<---- Soon to be top monster on X1.
@JonBeecham So much anger. Must have hit a nerve.
@oflow I've played the Alpha and am currently playing in the Beta for Destiny and can say with 100% certainty that it is not even close to a "Borderland's clone." Elements of the game remind me a great deal of Halo but never once did I even consider Borderlands in relation to Destiny until I read your post.
@oflow @RevLux The art design, focus on loot, and humor are the most distinct aspects of Borderlands for me. None of which seem to be central to Destiny's design. While Destiny does have quite a few weapons, armor, and other things that can be looted it isn't even close to what it's like in Borderlands, for me at least.
You can play much of the story missions solo or with others. That aspect is similar to Borderlands I guess. Although with Destiny even if you choose to do things solo you will still share much of the open world areas with other players until you branch off into instanced zones. Luckily Bungie seems to have resolved almost all of the issues that usually arise from this. You don't have to fight over the few chests, or "boss" spawns, or even kills which makes the experience fun instead of aggravating.
There are multiple part missions that require you to team up. Though all of them I've encountered so far have been completely optional. You also share all of your "money" between each of your characters as well as armor, weapons, etc. by placing them in a shared storage. (the shared storage is much larger than the one available in Borderlands.) You also have vehicles but they can be instantly spawned by pressing a couple of buttons in the areas where they are allowed.
Ultimately, while there may be some superficial similarities, playing Destiny just feels completely different than Borderlands. This is largely due to the more realistic graphical style, much more serious storyline both in terms of it's tone and narrative, and in it's pacing. Of course, all of this is just my long drawn out opinion. I've only played the Alpha and Beta so I've no idea whether it is truly representative of the entire game.
Well, we can talk about graphics and hp under the hood, or the bonnet if you'd prefer that, of gaming consoles all day long, but in the end the major reason for consumers to buy a console are the games. Sure, it's important that your big budget games look shiny-shiny and that the price of the console is fair, but if the console manufacturer has put a superb, unique and exclusive AAA-hit on the shelves of the stores, people will buy the console anyway. And that is so important that we even gave those games their own name some time ago: system-seller.
Played Destiny alpha and regardless if it's 1080p or not, it still looked like a last gen title. The game is overrated. I played for 6 hrs and I could not understand why anyone would hype this game up
@mi_hung_lo trouble is there designing these games to be cross platform with last-gen consoles... lets face studios are too money hungry trying to get cash from older system owners... move ON!
get us that run and gun AAA shooter we want!! or better yet just re-release blackops2 so i can atleast play zombies on my new system lol
@mi_hung_lo I was actually quite impressed with how Destiny looked and performed on the PS4. It didn't have the best graphics I've ever seen. For being a console only title it looks great imo and most definitely looked better than pretty much anything we had last gen. I haven't tried the PS3 version yet so I can't speak to it's performance.
The only thing I noticed that felt noticeably off was that none of the characters lips moved when they spoke. However, this is a Beta after all so I expect that is something they are still working on.
So a white PS4 themed Destiny bundle coming in September AND the PS4 had early beta access. Yeah I KINDA think they are putting alot more effort into the PS4 version, also meaning it will most likely have a higher resolution to seal the "deal". I certainly hope Destiny isn't pushing these consoles to the limit, but then again Watch Dogs couldn't get to the glorious 1080P on these new boxes. Not worth 399.99 kids, wait for a discount.
@rickphoenixxx This may come as a shock to some, but a game doesn't have to be in native 1080p to be good. Even though I primarily game on my p.c. I still enjoy all of the great console exclusives because they are awesome games and not due solely to their resolution. While I would obviously prefer at least 1080p it is not something that will ruin my experience if a game doesn't have it.
You have to keep in mind that the PS4 and XB1 could run any of their respective games in 1080p. Unfortunately they would have to restrict or remove other key features of the game's graphical fidelity in order to reach it. In some cases that cost would just be too high. What's the point of 1080p if you are stuck with poor a.a. or weak particle physics or bloom, or any number of other things.
Imho the Xb1, PS4, and Wii U are all more than worth their price for an avid gamer with the means to get them. They each offer several awesome exclusives now, with the promise of many more on the horizon. If you don't feel the same way then simply don't buy them. Just like any new console generation it will be slow going for the first couple of game gens. We will see better and better games as the gen goes on. With consoles as well as the p.c.
“A lot has to do with performance. We’re cross-platform, so we had to be very delicate with all four consoles, making sure they have the same experience, that it looks as good as it possibly can on all these consoles. A lot goes into that, from geometry to textures to post effects to particles to how many players you get on the screen. We’re always balancing that out to make sure everyone gets the same experience.” ~ Speaking to VentureBeat, Jason Sussman, a senior envornment artist at Bungie. (so don't bother buying xbox one or ps4)
1080p......900p.......720p even, I still prefer the Xbox One as a console. The PS4 is not exciting to me as a system, doesn't look particularly great as a box, and the games are pretty underwhelming so far especially since I've never been one for the cinematic, movie like style of most of their exclusives.
Not to mention they have done so little to change up the formula of what a console IS it doesn't feel particularly next gen either. It is just a more powerful PS3 which so far has less media functionality. At least Microsoft tried with the TV and voice commands to offer us something new.
@hitomo I've been tempted with the Wii U but Nintendo's games haven't done anything for me since the 90s. I'm just straight bored of them.
Xbox One, a bit of PC and I'd be happy. Well I wouldn't be upset if I bought a PS4 but given the choice I prefer Xbox.
@Dannystaples14 honestly for me neither console seems interesting, right now i see no reason at all to purchase any of them. I may just get Destiny on the 360, while hoping for a PC version someday...
@webheadx @55584623 @Dannystaples14 same here hehe! in the end i think it's the core gameplay that matters, i don't mind at all playing on last gen as long as the essence of the game remains intact. Sure there are graphical differences, just like there are between consoles and PCs, but should they really constrain us from enjoying a good game? Couple of weeks ago i was playing Deus Ex again and was having a blast.
The protagonist head is pretty much a textured cube lol!
Played Destiny on PS3 and PS4 and you will be fine either way if you are cheap and want game companies to fail
@mi_hung_lo @webheadx @55584623 @Dannystaples14 No I don't think they will support in 5 years. Spending hundreds of dollars for a new system with a handful of games with slightly better graphics than the last gen is stupid (Titanfall?)
@hitomo @Dannystaples14 I want a WiiU to play Bayonetta 2 and the Wonderful 101. But I'm not really big into mario, or zelda or kirby and I havent really just had an extra $300 that I felt like spending on it. I can see the brilliance in their games but they arent for me. I have sat and watched by nephews play it for hours though its entertaining I know that.
I strongly believe that when someone feels compelled to 'put down' a rival console, it is a manifestation of their insecurities over their original purchase. An effort to paper over any lingering doubts & make one feel better about their choice. More often than not, these comments are laced with hypocrisy & contradictions. For example, I consider Halo, Gears, Alan Wake & Remedies next game to be filmic experiences. They wear their influences so clearly on their sleeves.
Something new??? ... There are smartphones and tablets and computers that everyone has already. MS tried to reinvent the wheel and failed miserably!
The games are lame with both systems, not sure why xbots think they have all these great games???
Played Destiny on PS3 and PS4 and you will be fine if you are cheap and don't care about the game companies failing
@Dannystaples14 your comment is the resume of ignorance xbox fanboys have over ps4. it actually HAVE voice commands
@Dannystaples14 Cool story bro. So you prefer the Xbox One for everything except it's primary purpose. Seems legit.
Don't know about the rest of you but I buy a console to play video games. Not so I can talk to the stupid thing or it's media functionality.
@Dannystaples14 then you will just love the Wii U, trust me
@mi_hung_lo @55584623 @Dannystaples14 I've actually found that I really enjoy Destiny. Despite not being very excited after all the vids and things it is actually a great deal of fun for me. Which is a bit of a surprise because I don't usually play a great deal of fps online multiplayer.
I guess it's just not for you. I've read several comments the last few days that Destiny Is "overrated" yet it hasn't been rated or reviewed yet so I don't think that is the case.
