GS News - MGS V: Ground Zeroes Beaten in 10 Min, Do Games Need Plots?
Xbox One to be released in more places, new PS4 update, MGS:V Ground Zeroes finished in ten minutes, and Riot dev says game plots are “overrated”?
Depends on the game. Meat Boy doesn't need plot. Mario Bros. doesn't need plot. Racing and fighting games don't need plot.
Action, adventure, and shooter games do better with plot.
RPG's are of course, already plot heavy.
This is a genre specific thing so you can't make blanket statements about plot. In some games they matter more than others.
Plot is a must for some genres like adventure games - there's no point'n'click game without story. The same goes with story based RPGs like Planescape: Torment or The Witcher. However there are many genres that don't need story at all e.g. platformers, simulators of vehicles and machines, puzzle games, true sandboxes, tactical and strategic games etc. Good gameplay makes every game good. If gameplay sucks, even the best plot won't help.
Characters is one reason I play games, plot is the other, fun is another. A game doesn't get my time if it doesn't tick all of those boxes in one way or another.
I mean even Dark Souls which largely leaves the plot up to 90% imagination wouldn't be any good without that 10%. There has to be a reason to go in, and crawl your ass 1 billion deaths later to the end.
I honestly don't see what people see in LoL or DOTA. They don't do anything for me at all. They are about as pointless as COD and Battlefield. I won't be buying another FPS for a long long time, including Titanfall. I've tried both LoL and DOTA 2 and even ignoring the cancer that is the community in those games, I won't be installing them a second time.
A speedrun of TEN minutes for a retail released game, sans cutscenes? AND that game is a Metal Gear? After this no one has the right to bitch about Titanfall not really having a campaign mode.
Friend sign on alerts while in-game would be nice. And be able to adjust friends list and groups and set which group gives you log on alert.
Xbox One is updated every few weeks adding in new features while PS4 finally sends out an update with no new features, just some stuff to keep the thing actually running...
"plot is overated" ??? What was "LAST of US" then? Its one thing to say MOBA´s like LOL, HON or DOTA have little plot but to put all games in the same bag... that´s just plain silly (too put it lightly). Games as a media has a long ways to go... they will evolve.
Some current categories will be insufficient to define certain upcoming games.
Bad new for the Maple Leaf people... kinda sucks but its probably a currency issue... as mentioned in the video.
GAMERS DONT REMEMBER PLOT?? YOU MEAN I DONT ACTUALLY KNOW WORD FOR WORD THE ENTIRE SCRIPT OF METAL GEAR SOLID??? Or how about the plot to FF VI VII VIII? Did I forget all those too? I mean shit, I wish I could forget all about the BIG SHELL,
Goes to show that the Dev's for those MOBA's are as mindless as the morons who are addicted to them.
Do games need plots? Not really. Good stories need plots. If your game is story driven, then have a fucking plot, please! And a consistent one. Looking at you Mass Effect 2.
Importance of plot obviously depends on the type of game. Don't think there's any real need to argue that is there?
Btw, off subject, any guesses when the first next gen price drops will start? Christmas maybe?
In an earlier article, it was stated that some folks from Konami could beat Ground Zeroes in 5 minutes, but there has always been more to the MGS games than a simple speed run.
Great show Jess! I enjoy it everyday.

That lead designer of inFAMOUS seems to be ping pong ball that likes to bounce around from one to another. If you're a woman, that is probably not the guy you'd want as boyfriend or husband, that's just my guess. I could be wrong.
"The PS4 has an update."
I wonder how many consoles got bricked??
I hope not. If they don't have a 'System Restore' feature, I think they should. They should learn from history and 'steal' a feature from MS Windows.
"Someone beat Metal Gear Solid Ground Zeros in 10 minutes by running through, skipping all cut scenes and side missions."
It sounds like he missed out on 90% of the game andall the fun too.
That story struck a memory. I remember the creators of Dishonored saying someone beat Skyrim in 3 hours.
Jess, it seems like you got a brand new wardrobe on your birthday--very very beautiful.
"Does plot matter in games?" is a ridiculous question. For story-driven games, it certainly does. Yes, people often connect to well drawn characters in games - Joel and Ellie or Booker and Elizabeth, for example - or to the setting The Last of Us and Bioshock Infinite being good examples here as well, but those characters don't exist independent of the game in which they exist, and it's the plot that drives the narrative in these games forward, moving the characters through the gameworld. Character is revealed through conflict, and conflict is a plot construct.
Unique to games, and differentiating them from movies or books or other media with strong narrative, is gameplay, and in a story-based game, it's the plot that provides the motivation for the player to move the characters through the gameworld. In a lot of cases, plot in games occurs dynamically - Extra Credits calls this "gameplay as narrative", where what you do and experience within the game world while controlling a character is a key part of the game's story. Most of the plot, in other words, occurs through the actions the player takes within the game world. Cutscenes may provide context and character development, but, in a lot of games, the gameplay is the plot.
In Outrun2 or Feeding Frenzy, however, plot is entirely irrelevant. As is character, and setting is nothing more than a backdrop.
Plot can be an essential part of a game or entirely irrelevant, depending on the type of game.
characters drive plot, they arnt 100% separate. to say plot is overrated is just silly. no one even cares about the "characters" in LoL, just their abilities. that guy talking about plot is like M. Night Shamalongadingdong giving a lecture on subtlety, pretty pointless.
His comment's didn't matter because he is not a developer for a genre-specific that story is important. Can you play a graphic novel without having a good story? His argument is cleary invalid.
This bozo just doesnt have the talent to make a game with a good story so he calls such games overrated. League of Legends is overrated if anything, what a fool. People like that assclown are ruining gaming and I hope a bird craps in his mouth.
Depends on the type of game. Some games do not need plots and others are built around plots. Kind of an open ended question.
I never really cared where the ball went after I finished a game of Pong. Maybe he had a family and being bounced between two bars was how he earned his leaving. Maybe he was the original wolf on Wall Street. Who knows?
But for a game like Dead Space, it's nice to have a beginning and end as to why a mining ship is in disarray.
@rickphoenixxx Speed runs don't count. This is a specific challenge to beat a game as fast as you can, sans enjoyment.
And I'd still complain about titanfall lacking a real single player mode. Angry Joe's review is spot on on how bare bones that game is and gamers should be more upset about paying $60 for that than $30 for MGS:GZ.
@rickphoenixxx Titanfall is $60. Ground Zeroes is $30.
@rickphoenixxx Speedruns can be deceptive. I think you can beat Skyrim in 30 mins, and that game offers hundreds of hours of gameplay.
@UNCStriker88 Usually they're security updates. Perhaps Sony learned from the hack a couple years back and actually want to make sure their system continues to run stable and without any interruptions in service due to hackers. How is that a bad thing? I have no problem with those kinds of patches and don't need a new feature thrown at me every couple of weeks. My PS4 plays games. That's what I bought it for. Maybe you bought yours to watch TV and that's okay. I use a 32 inch LCD tv as my computer monitor so I just watch TV shows on that. Didn't see the point in buying a console that could do it too especially with it's weak eSRAM.
@UNCStriker88 PS4 is about games, not a bunch of tacked on piddly crap that any computer or even mobile device can already do. As someone whose PS3 was killed by a system update, I don't welcome them anyway.
@fllyZr4 He's drunk on the fact LoL is popular and thinks he can school everyone else in their genius.
@bboysoda2k3 ha! dream on, you are going to need a japanese translator to tell Sony
@EdAl2112 Story = Plot
@ArchoNils2 Good luck getting good plot in a Kojima game. After I listened to all the recordings, an hour and a half went by and I didn't even press start to begin the game.
@Pawfalcon My hunch is Christmas time will bring a revamped console with more HD space and maybe even a game bundled in, but no price drop before well into 2015. They started off pretty cheap this time around and costs will have to drop considerably before a cut is feasible.
Just go to Amazon, tell the truth about the PS3 console or a PS3 game, or the PS3 version of a multi-plat game--just something about the PS3 and watch the hate come in.
@CalamityKait Nicely written!
Oh sure, take the opportunity to diss on League of Legends.
Are you even paying attention to the subject matter of plots in video games?
@RicanV Dude, how the game unfolds IS the plot in Pong...
Pong on the Magnavox Oddesey.
I know your age, it's Forever 21.
I agree with what you said, basically it depends on the game.
My favorite story driven game is hockey. Knock guy on their but, steal puck, pass, shoot, score, and fight occasionally--Crowd goes wild.
@RicanV True, a game like Space Invaders has all the plot needs in the title. Many games do benefit from interesting character development & a good plot to drive the game.
I'd also like to take the opportunity to say, GS - your site is still terrible. Auto-loading the next page once the video is finished makes it really annoying when I want to leave a comment.
@lonewolf315 @EdAl2112A plot is what, why things happen in a story. A combination of a premise and a conflict or a complication. It makes the story interesting and makes logical connections between the events of the story. So you can have no plot in a story, just be a random story. So story not the same as plot.
Is there a reason you stalk my post just to disagree with everything I say? What is it you hope to accomplish?
Why? Well my opinion is that GS is of course a big site with a lot of users and a lot of hits so to speak. The site's primary goal is to serve the largest audience, and that's most likely not the type that do things like comment. It's the same as other recent complaints, like how the featured stuff often seems the least important, or that super short buy/don't buy video thing they tried. Ever find yourself feeling that some of the shows episodes are just too short? Most people online don't want to watch anything more than a few minutes. You get the idea.
Oh, we will see. With a temperament like yours, you will reach your limit of patience eventually.
Oh well, you do realise that you have said that before but that isnt going to make me go away.
I hope to annoy the hell out of you. ;)
