GS News - Half-Life 3 open world with post-2013 release?
French site Journal du Gamer claims to have a source close to Valve who says the sequel is well underway, features RPG elements, and likely arriving after 2013.
This rumor is probably not true. Valve has not been interested in anything RPG before. Quests sounds ridiculous for Half-Life. Open world sounds unlikely. And inspiration from the Elder Scrolls? That doesn't sound right, Half-Life isn't anything like Elder Scrolls and Valve IS the inspiration, not the one who gets inspired.
And of course it's a full Half-Life 3 game. What, you'll be buying a trial version of the game? And Half-Life 2 Episode 3 would be called that if it really was Half-Life 2. If it's called Half-Life 3 of course it's an entirely full fledged sequel and not Episode 3. Valve doesn't try to trick people.
After 2013? Well, let's just wait and see...
In the event that this is all true, please disregard this entire statement.
Yea open world is nice
comparing to the awful linear scripted games these days
I actually found the first half life better, and "black mesa" the best.
Finally some news about Half-Life 3 that is still alive. I immediately fell in love when I played HL1. and then HL2 end it episodes. The physics of this game was fantastic at that time. and now I am playing Black Mesa. The idea of an open-world is awesome(like stalker). Cant wait to see some footage of HL3 and its new engine. (sorry for bad english)
Half-Life with an open world would be cool. It would allow the universe that Half-Life created to be explored with more overall depth than with a more linear design. A structure similar to Borderlands (world wise) could easily be done. The thought of some great side stories sweetens the whole prospect. Of course, Source would need to be updated to support a fully open world.
That being said, I'll wait for Valve to spill the beans on HL3, as I doubt this rumor.
I think I threw up a little bit. Nothing Valve has done previously has shown any interest in making an RPG. They're a FPS specialist anyway. Stupid rumour.
Maybe Half Life 3 has been completed a long time ago, and Valve has never bothered to release it? Wouldn't that just be a kick in the head...
you really think valve would let something like this leak? I'll wait for gaben to tell me what the next half life is
Lol I knew this was a BS rumor when he said that Valve took inspiration from Oblivion and Skyrim. Half-Life inspires other developers, not the other way around.
hmmm... Half life 3 with open world... that will not happen unless they have created new source engine [hope they will do that]. Beside, imagine when playing Half life 3 in open world: every 10 mins you go, the "Loading..." with freeze appear =.=. So if the map is so large => "Loading..." will appears about 200 times or more :\. Look at the portal 2, some map are big [for contemplation only :|, cant go explore the whole map unless you noclip, also theres not many big map], the others are small [even some are really small... about 1 mins and load to another map]. Also look at the Half Life 2, maps are really small too [except L4D... but cant say its really open world]. Dont forget that Portal 2 or Half life 2 though have small maps, but they look pretty heavy [7.5gb for P2 and maybe 10gb or more for Half life 2, including its episode 1 and 2]. So that means Source engine is really good [best choice for making games] but its too heavy, also the time for playing its games are kinda short [below 10 hrs for normal i think :\, unless you guys add new maps, mods then could be longer, however, cost too much gbs for maps and mods]. Last one, if they gonna make open-world Half life 3, the minimum requirement must be higher than BF3's max setting to play it smoothly without loading, lag, etc... [I HATE PINK "ERROR" WORD APPEAR IN THE VALVE GAME !!!]. Before finishing, i need an answer for this question... WHY NEED TO CHANGE ? Even Valve's games are short, heavy but the gameplay is really fun, awesome [even EPIC]. Remember, gameplay is the only thing that define game's value, not big map, open world thing or new graphic. Look at the other games, at first kinda really good... but the sequel SUCK A LOT ! Gameplay is worse than 1st one and nothing's impressive but improving graphic, end. GRAPHIC ! WHY NEED TO BE SO REAL ? Look at the minecraft, its simple but more than 2m or more people play it. So, before adding new things, BE SURE IF NEW THINGS MAKE THE GAME BETTER. IF NOT, DONT CHANGE ANYTHING ! By the way, why dont we just follow the traditional way ? That will make Valve become unique, though just simple, old hat but still are awesome. [im sure the others cant do this].Thats it, thats my opinion. Sorry for my bad english typing because im suck at it. Hope Half Life 3 will still be as perfect as the old one :) [or we gonna hear Cave Johnson make a speech about: IM GONNA BURN YOUR HOUSE DOWN !... WITH THE "OPEN WORLD" !!! =.=]
It might be a completely different game, not the Half-Life 3 we would be expecting. This is a shot in the dark, but it's possible that the game focuses around Adrian Shepard taking on tasks for the G-Man. Also the hub, so to speak could be the Borealis that Gordon travels to. Once he is there he uses the portal technology on board to take on quests and tasks in different parts of the world. Just some ideas.
remember....rpg and open world ELEMENTS .... don't worry, i'm sure they know what they're doing and I doubt they'll dissapoint.
YES! awesome news! people, it's not gonna be RPG. it's gonna have RPG ELEMENTS. something like Stalker.
yes, please. i'm officially exited.
NOOOO!!! If it is free roam or RPG it wont be Half Life. Think about it Valve, Half Life and Half Life 2 are easily some of the greatest games ever made, if not THE greatest, other devs immitated you because of your innovation. Every Half Life game has been linear, and they were still that good, still that solid, most of the time when you watch a review about a game linearity is normally a negative, but in Half Life it was a positive, dont change that, you used it well, the memorable moments in Half Life need a streight line to follow, for the sake of solid gameplay and a way to tell the story. Look back on what made Half life 2 that great and think about it before you go changing the core dynamics of the francise.
An Example: When the Black Mesa fan made Half Life reboot mod thing came out recently, me and my friend were playing it and I was hating on the addition of iron sights and my friend asked me why (he is realitively new to Half Life), and I said something like "firstly it doesnt even need saying really, and secondly cause this is Half Life and not cod". I'm all for new innovation and new features added but things like Iron sights or RPG elements are a core gameplay mechanics and its a bad idea to add them...
...Because then it isnt Half Life.
OPEN WORLD WOULD BE AWESOME !!! :Dhope they focus on the story too though...the story and the gameplay - THE BEST THING ABOUT THE GAME FOR ME <3
It would be pretty awesome to have an open world game in the Half-Life universe, but I think what I'd prefer is a conclusion to the Half-Life "Trilogy" and then possibly a reboot or parallel story with the open-world and RPG elements. Playing as a citizen of City 17 would be a cool setting for an RPG.
Hope this source is wrong. Valve has never let their fans down. And for then to copy a skyrim kind of game, I think is highly unlikely. When Valve stops being creative as hell, and start copiyng ohter devs, is when I'll retire newer gens and install my N64 back.
I was just thinking of Half Life 2 yesterday, and i was remembering that it was the first game i had ever seen with accurate physics, and how much I loved it.
I will get it if and when it comes out. i was just wondering though, is there a specific reason you don't want open world?
I don't know if it will be open world , but i really doubt they will put quests and skills in it , they are not that dumb.
If this is all true - open world, RPG elements, etc. - and I truly hope it isn't; I cannot say I am looking forward to this.
Gaben, I know you are reading this. Whatever you do, please do it right. Me and many other gamers are close to leave PC gaming and gaming overall.
If HL3 fucks up, we will sell our high end PCs and get into another hobby with the money.
We are adults now. We can't find the same joy we used to have while playing games before. We have work and responsibilities, some even kids and wives, and all these shitty games won't cut it.
Our favorite hobby is coming to and end and only you can save it. I want gaming as part of my life until I die. Please make it true.
Open world?? Nooooooooo!!!
Please VALVE give us a great game with all the Half-Life elements and a great final to the series, that's what all the fans want!!!
If VALVE wants to do an open world game, they can do it on a new IP and I will be happy to buy it, but don't betray Gordon Freeman fans...:(
I don't understand how people can be bitching about this. If you're a shooter fan then I don't see how you can take Valve getting inspiration from a title such as FO3 can be disappointing. I, for one, am looking forward to seeing Valve out-Bethesda Bethesda themselves. That alongside the Valve touch is most likely going to wind up with one of gaming cultures most monumental titles.
Hm I could be wrong but, seems like a hoax to me. Open world and RPG elements aren't Valve's staple, but, maybe they'll surprise us.
Great we got an update on half life 3, still doesnt change the fact that we as gamers have been waiting for this for a very long time. Still nice to know that the game is in the works
guess what : valve is rumored to enter hardware market.... what game exclusivity might bring valve hardware closer to xbox, PS3/PS4 , wiiU and other kickstarter things out there :D ... YES , you get it : HALF-LIFE 3 !
i would so BUY that hardware for this game... i love HALF-LIFE... i love VALVE !!!
i believe when it is in my hands, not when a date is given, not when its on preorder, hell, not even if it was a week away. i have disappointed myself to many times already.
@The__Kraken well, it's definitely more credible than the last leak, which was very unbelievable
Open world I can understand. Might have some truth behind it
@ekowayuki2 to be honest, it wouldn't surprise me if they have made a new source engine. if memory serves me correctly, the most recent source update was 2009, and bearing in mind the impending console generation they could really do with an update.
@ekowayuki2 Agreed with you! We don't want Valve to fail like Id Software did with open world, in RAGE (it's a nice game, but kind of incomplete). Hope HL3 Comes before 2014.
@jamesbigmac nah, valve are smart enough to keep it with Freeman, there'd be too much community backlash. that said, the borealis idea could make sense
@edussz skyrim is what you thought of? im leaning more towards fallout/borderlands. you know because they have guns and skill trees.
@badstyle yeah lame is a good a word. Don't get me wrong I love my RPG's but not for Half Life
@jorge69696 Dude, totaly understand you! Every 10 games I buy only one is woth it... I'm thinking too about retiring...
We are the old farts here, the majority of games released nowadays are directed for kids that all they want is button mashing with no strategy or intellegence whatsoever. All the games are going with the goal to reach a broader audience(means as easy as drinking a cup of tea).
I think I'll keep playing videogames until HL3 comes out, then I'll retire...
I had a good run:)
@jorge69696 Could not have said it better myself! Gone are those care free days
