CoD will need to revamp the series, make it more strategic, have classes that actually work well together and less lone wolf style and more group work style all without annoying 8 year olds trying to act tough before CoD even looks like being a decent game let alone Game of Thrones popular.

If CoD wants to be as popular as GoT, it better be as good.

The problem with Ghosts is the single player was boring and the story was poor and not emerging the player.

SLEDGEHAMMER are looking in the right direction there, but will Activision ruin the product by rushing the developer and there for end up with another Ghosts....

Bring on Unreal tournament and a new Counterstrike to make COD work for their fans!

Unless the new COD campaign takes more than 5 hours to complete, it won't be a surprise, just the same old stuff, improved graphics naturally, new story, maybe a new gun or two, but the same old thing they do every other year, or every year if we consider the other company making the other biyearly COD

what is the difference between "free" and "free to play"?

That idea for the U.T. is unique and inspirational we could see some new game houses come out of this nice idea and a good one on how to pay for it!

Is the headline deliberatly misleading?

"GS News - CoD wants to be Game of Thrones; New Unreal Tournament!"

That looks almost like "POS: Advanced Babysitting wants to be new UT". I know that's not the case but it's very badly written. Someone might think it means that.

I'm really ambiguous about the Red Wedding using the "let's gratuitously and bloodily kill off a lot of characters to create shock and emotion." I realize tragedy from the ancient Greeks to Hamlet has the death of main characters - but there was a sort of strict logic to it. Ned Stark's death was logical. The Red Wedding was just sort of piling on.

And I don't expect a COD game to be subtle. But I really do love games that tell stories like Last of US. So I hope they succeed with the narrative.

Great show.  Thank you Jess.  Best show on the Internet and TV.

Good things and games come to those who wait, but I'm sure some people just can't wait to add an under-cooked game to massive backlog.

CoD and emotions and emotional connections.

Of course, the human factor always make a big difference.  We're all emotional feeling creatures first and logical people second.  Maybe if they add Cortana from Halo, Miranda and Liara from ME series, Jess from GameSpot and a few others, they might be able to pull it off.

I love your shirt Jess.  Good choice.

The CoD franchise was popular before the TV series of ASOIAF came out, Modern Warfare 2 was massive back in 2009. I'm betting revenue from the CoD games exceeds the revenue generated by the show (allow for some serious online piracy though).
Sledgehammer has confused being "popular" with being known and respected, but I like this type of ambition, CoD has always seemed like a great FPS but never an FPS people were going to look back on and place in the same league as Half Life or the first Halo. Those games effectively changed the genre and if Sledgehammer can, somehow, develop a game that good I won't even care if it has Call of Duty stamped on the box.

Sledgehammer deliver a "Red Wedding"? Well, given that they are the ones who brought us the jaw-dropping ending of the original Dead Space, let's just hope Actvision actually allow them to do what they can do best, which is unlikely the case.

A CoD red wedding? People at Activision have to learn to be less greedy and pass because they're apparently smoking way too much. Main reason the Red Wedding was so talked about was because it was so messed up, like seeing Santa get cornered in a prison shower or something. So unless they plan on going far beyond their mall shooting bit AND making us give a ...hoot about any of their characters that ain't gonna happen. Though I guess I can see why they got 2 time Oscar winner Kevin Spacey now, they're gonna get him pregnant. Get your knives ready everyone. I can see the Lawyers and Politicians licking their lips already ...Activision

I've missed UT, awesome to hear they're making a new one! I remain skeptical on CoD, but who knows, maybe this one will actually be different, not holding my breath though.

They really think adding a few minutes of cutscenes with Kevin Spacey is going to lure in "Game of Thrones" level crowds?  I would think most gamers are smart enough to just watch the cutscenes on YouTube and not buy the game.

Sometimes there are happy coincidences. At the same day Activision proved their usual unjustified hubris again the actual king of FPS declared his return to our screens...

A completely free, developed with the help and input of the community, made with Unreal Engine 4, full moddable and mod-supported and PC-only new Unreal Tournament? Hell yes, Epic. Finally an FPS to wait for and to look forward to... :)

Regarding CoD: I can't remember the name of a single character in any of the series, or a defining characteristic of any of them. Nor can I really remember any particular storyline. What I do remember is some of the set pieces and gameplay. So for me anyway, CoD has NEVER been strong on narrative or character development and the emotional attachment/investment that would supposedly develop from that.

Well if you judge the COD series solely on sales alone then you could say it already has that popularity.

But this isn't the kind of widespread and passionate fan-base generated and earned by a truly brilliant show. Oh no, this is a mindless set of unfortunate and enslaved consumers who blindly give away their money to lazy developers and publishers every year for an hopelessly similar experience that seems set on killing any sort of innovation in the mainstream areas of the industry.

Just a couple of weeks ago I was complaining about how much I miss shooters like Unreal Tournament. So glad about this news. :D

Also, I'd bet cash money that ESO never comes to consoles. If I had a dime for every MMORPG that launched for PC with a promise to be on consoles as well 'soon', and then disappeared in a puff of bs, I'd have at least a dollar.

@fanedo  Free means that you get 100% of the game no charge. Free to play means that you get to play the game but you need to pay a lot of money to get all the games features, or pay money to unlock items that would other wise take 100s of hours to get.

@Wintereich CoD will never be different, doesn't fit Activision's style. Activision's style is to milk milk milk never innovate.

@Qixote  You really think that watching cutscenes of CoD on youtube is worth my time???

@KillaGinjaNinja I stopped playing CoD ages ago, but some of the WW2 stuff stands out in my mind, like storming the Reichstag and planting the flag of the motherland above it :).  I found that to be moving, thinking about how a real Soviet soldier felt in those lost moments of the battle, that victory and sense that it was finally over.  I mean the real stuff, rather than the probably carefully crafted recreated moments later recorded by Soviet propagandists :).  But hey even that stuff shown to the Soviet citizens back home would have been very powerful and emotional.

However, I must admit that my feelings probably have little to do with the game having some very well crafted narrative.  In that case it was probably mainly the subject matter being "real" and connected with such major events in history, ones that I have a lot of personal interest in.

@KillaGinjaNinja  To anyone who said "Cod is strong on narrative or character development and the emotional attachment/investment" I would say "You poor devils clearly have not played that many games".

robchiang1990
robchiang1990

@robertcain  There is no such a thing as lazy developers and publishers, the effort to pull a mainstream game together is not laziness, only greedy publishers is killing innovation.

robchiang1990

@Pelezinho777  Since even Kojima can not create content of such shock value and not be criticized because of it, none of COD game can do it, not even by the Dead Space crew.
