GS News - Backwards Compatibility On Xbox One; New Borderlands Game?
Microsoft is thinking about backwards compatibility for the Xbox One, Borderlands may be getting a “pre-sequel”, and who hurt Phil Spencer’s feelings?! HINT: IT’S YOU.

Microsoft needs to stop thinking about the idea and just do it. And you can tell Phil Spencer to kiss my ass.
If Microsoft does Backward compatibility, then that is a game changer, Hopefully it will push sony to do the same. I don't have Xbox, but I have a PS4 and a PS3 with a bunch of PS3 titles, I would very much like to see my PS3 titles run on PS4.
The only thing annoying about Uplay is having to log in to their servers every time you want to play, that is if you're connected to the internet. Besides that it's actually an okay service (maybe not so much for PC). Plus you can unlock new items (character skins, weapons, maps, playable characters, etc) for almost every Ubisoft game that releases. I think what bothers people is that they're forced to use the service, also that it's a way Ubi can crack down on game sharing for people who are borrowing a game or bought a used copy by charging them a fee to activate online/mulplayer capabilities.
Yeah, Watch Dogs requiring U-Play is lame but I assumed it was a given, so no surprise there. At least they sell it though Steam on unlike some other publishers. I'm sure DA: Inquisition on Steam is not going to happen.
I don't give a damn about Uplay. I'm just happy to see you again Jess \o/ You're so beautiful as always <3
But of course, thanks for the news also :)
Microsoft, DO IT! Backwards compatibility would make Sony's paid Now service look dumb, irrelevant, and a rip off. Announced at E3 would win over a lot of missed brownie points over last year's debacle.
Hey Jess, I dunno about you, but I think that applying a proper backward compatibility between PS4 and PS3 would be fantastic.
So many good PS3 titles are out there, still coming, and still being played.
Imagine playing Dark Souls 1 or 2 with the performance power of the PS4!
No more Blighttown stuttering and framedrops.
Or playing Some other ps3 games at higher resolution or at 60 fps.
I would be tempted to buy an X1 if it was 360 compatible (providing I don't have to plug in the kinect, never kept up with the news on that, can it be unplugged now?).....
Don't bother with backwards compatibility, there are always issues. Plus if you do digital downloads on 360 (like myself) and arcade games. That's not going get emulation. Keep the 360 as long as you want. On the flip side, I think now is as good a time as any to by a next gen console, while keeping the old. Do you really want to play upcoming (amazing) games like Destiny, The Evil Within, Watchdogs, Alien Isolation, Wolfenstein with DOOM 4 beta etc. on your last gen consoles? I mean watered down graphics, lesser frame rates, and just a less enjoyable experience. Why pay 60 dollars for an inferior version of a new game? Even if it is slight. I also don't see how they are pushing DOOM on last gen consoles being that it was set to be a PC only title. Because of it's graphical prowess.
Technology has to move forward, it's nice to play old things that are still relevant, but how much longer will that last? Everyone upgrades, phones, pc's, tablets, cars, and even food!! If you can afford the best, why not get the best? Would you rather drive an older Mustang V6, or a newer GT V8? All preference, but I think most would say the more modern one. By the time you spend(t) 60$ a game for 360 and PS3, you could have already bought a console. Especially now with used PS4's for 379$, and used ONES for 449$. I love my 360, but for new titles I'm stepping up my game. Literally, not just for graphics, but for a better gaming experience over all. ;o)
I'm not bothered about backwards compatibility personally since I feel the time that they are needed is going to be gone in no time at all.
Someone buys a next gen console for Watch Dogs and takes their time with it, they can then play any launch titles they felt they might like, any of the Indie titles that happen to be out at the time and games like Metal Gear, or ESO if they so wish and not to mention console exclusives so far. Easily enough to get people through the summer and after the summer the titles are going to start flooding in.
Not to mention most people probably still have their old console so they can play Dark Souls II, South Park and any of the thousands of games on that. Backwards compatibility is a mild convenience at best. At launch. After launch it is just dead weight.
Microsoft shouldn't just tack on a Streaming service and make us all pay yet another monthly membership for it. They made 300,000 servers or whatever it was for proper gaming services not backwards compatibility so they can waste space letting us play old games.
OnLive proves that Streaming is crap. I think Sony were stupid to buy Gaikai. If they had bought it so you could play modern games at 1080p and 60fps on a 5MB broadband it would be a game changer but it just won't happen. 5MB gets you sub 720p and screen artifacts.
Not how I want my next gen games to look. I'd say even OnLive streaming PC games looks worse than the PS3 and 360.
I think that if MS could get a 360 emulator running without problems on the one, it would shift a lot of units. Many 360 users have a massive collection of some really great games. If they can run these on the one it's a great selling point for an upgrade.
BL was a much better game. BL2 did some things nice, but i would say it did more harm then good to the series. BL2 is nothing but a hyped-up poorly balanced mess, created for quick bucks for its overpriced dlc's and skins.
BL2 should have been what Destiny is doing(it can minus the online events). If Destiny turns out amazing, I probably wouldn't care to even look at the news for a BL3, unless they announce some major changes to the series' gameplay and such.
I think the backwards compatability is an absolute welcome! I'm not a console gamer personally butI have always felt that when you guys spend so much money on your stuff, its a shame that you cant carry your games over to the nice new hardware generation that comes around. If you had the ability to play older games on the new consoles playstation or xbox, then that would definitely be nice incentive to warrent the upgrade where you can play all your current games on, and play all the new powerhouses that are going to be released too....
I see no downside to this, I hope they can do it because it really is something gamers have been asking for since the switch form ps2 to ps3 and xbox to 360. More features like this go a long way, and its definitely a nice feature to have. Hoping you're not waiting some 2 years for it to happen though and limited to only 10 games or something.
Backwards compatibility for xbone is backwards logic sheeple. Sheep herder Phil can't find his way out of his octagon office
Would I Want Emulation or the Real Thing?
I'll take the real thing. I'd rather play 360 games on 360 hardware than on emulation software. I'm sure Micro$$$oft'$ $hareholder'$ will agree with that one. Maybe they make a cheaper 360 hardware peripheral for 360 games in the future.
Would I want a Borderlands 2 Prequel Or is My Time Better Spent Elsewhere?
My time is better spent elsewhere. No enough time, I hate scavenging everthing all the time everwhere, not interested in being milked for DLC.
I though Borderlands was boringlands and Borderland's 2 was great except for the scavenging.
Great show. Thank you Jess and company.
If Microsoft made an emulator that didn't require a service or streaming, they'd win back some serious points from Sony. Seems feasible, all they have to do is emulate the CPU and the RAM. If the system is as powerful as they say, there's more than enough overhead to run both an emulator and the emulated game. Hope they do this. That would be awesome as hell.
@thedeadraptor they won't. It's just talk to raise some ears. they will say they are thinking about it. They will say it's technically hard but they are seeing if it can be done. By the time you realise it's been long enough, years will have passed and the speech will change to -"We rather use our time to prepare for the next generation, and make new better experiences for gamers".
Jeez... haven't you been around for the previous generations of consoles? They always use the same lures.
@Viktor737 I love the way she says "innovative".
@Sevenizz HAIL HYDRA!!
While I think backwards compatibility is great, I also think companies building next gen machines need to focus solely on their machines next gen capabilities, and not whether or not it can play last gens games. After a time, yes, bringing in backwards compatibility is a feasible option.
@xeis-net You don't need the Kinect plugged in.
@Scarshi From MY COLD DEAD HANDS!!! lol
@gannon27 I think you're right about that. Also, that's the same reason why they'll hold back a couple of years, because they still want to ship more 360s..probably more money in that?
@Pheonix985 Digital Rights Management
@teufelherz Just ignore this post completely Jesse, you do a great job and even though it's not important, you are easy on the eyes. Very cute. :)
@teufelherz That you're oblivious to how superficial your entire body of text was is more than a little surprising. You sir have your priorities out of order and no one owes you a hair color, personality or anything else for that matter. You lack even basic common courtesy, I wouldn't expect anyone to give the slightest of fucks what you want. Later, inconsiderate Dbag.
@teufelherz After trying to articulate my absolute rage towards your comment I am left with merely saying this: If you know how to read I would suggest that you obtain information that way and keep your degrading comments to yourself about one's appearance when watching videos.
@vackillers Being able to play 360 games on xbox1 would be great especially as my 360 is old and noisy as heck. Less crashes, maybe slightly better Visuals would be some of the incentives to play 360 games on xbox1
I was hoping to move fully to the xbox1 but devs seem to want to pull players back to the 360 instead of taking advantage of new tech. Suprising that they bring games out just for the old gen but not new gen, alot of the time bringing out for pc but leaving the xbox1 out
Would be awesome to use the xbox1 interface with 360 games aswell if thats possible.
@homelessgamer You're right, streaming old games on a PS4, thus wasting GB's by the minute is a much better idea.
@diego_corleone borderlands is probably the first and only game i can think of that has a GOTY edition that doesn't include ALL the DLCs lol
so you could be right it might be another DLC that doesn't wanna be labelled as a DLC so they made a full retailed game out of it lol
Indeed it would, but knowing Microsoft's gaming division, that's highly unlikely.
@07wintert never had a girlfriend like her I suppose....
@ooblah @skunkpants no, it's not. It never was, never is and never will. They need to be able to re-sell you the same games again with every new console generation. Either an HD version (so fashion right now in this last gen) or under a "Classics" colection(like the previous gen), or even a "series" compilation (like Mass Effect trilogy, or a Resident Evil colection). Either way, they want to sell games, not give you new forms of playing old games that will prevent you from buying new ones.
It would have to be online able too. Original Xbox games that could be played on a 360 were not online enabled - even when Live was still running on Xboxes.
not Australian but two i had where better looking
