Frankly, this game should come packaged with the official guide! A tough RPG!

The unique side-scrolling interface and 2D arcade style combat system brings a whimsical retro feel to this also very foreign setting of a Norse folklore adaptation. In fact, the game itself will baffle even the most experienced RPG gamer. There's a lot of micro management and delicate steps the player needs to do in order to advance properly in the game. The game doesn't hint you much on what to do, which gives it the hard factor. So much so that I have to follow walkthroughs strictly to understand how to UNDERSTAND the game at all!

Well, if you can look past that and maybe rely on game guides, you will find that Valkyrie Profile has a touching and mature story that is worthy of a play-through once to see what it's like. But again, you need to fulfill some very specific steps in order to unveil the whole story which makes it a hassle sometimes, since then you will need the guide on stand-by all the while.

One very important and engaging feature of the game is the unique combat system and the many strategic attributes affecting the efficiency of your battle layout, which needs some time to figure out. Even with all the complaining, I had a great time on this game trying to get rare treasures to boost my party from dungeons and such, so I guess if you're a true RPG fan, you may find this a gem for you. Not to mention that the new CGI movies are a blast to unlock and watch!
