The only 'True Crime' around here was that this 'game' was released to the general public at full price at the time.

User Rating: 3 | True Crime: New York City PS2
True Crime: New York City was the second game of the franchise and the sequel to True Crimes: Streets of L.A. that came out over two years ago at the time. In this game, you play as a thug now turned into a cop that try to learn what happened to his mentor on the night that he earned his detective badge. You enter into a world of underground crime trying to unmask what happened to him around the dirty suburbs of New York City. Also while working on the story missions, they're a few side missions to do too. Such as illegal street racing, fight in dojos and various crimes across New York City ranging from mild domestic abuse to major human trafficking. There's also a bit of karma in your actions as a police officer (similar to inFamous 1 and 2 on the PlayStation 3) that during these side missions, you could either go by the book and become a good cop while ranking up in the NYPD, or be a bad cop and just take the law into your own hands.

A game like True Crime: New York City definitely sounds like it had potential......until you play the game itself and you learn how much of a disaster it truly is. For starters, the game is riddled with bugs and glitches with a great deal of them being game breakers. The controls feel clumsy at best especially when it comes to using guns. A simple tap of the 'L1' button causes you to lock on to the closest target which usually works against you since you might be targeting one guy and instead, the game will target someone else leaving you exposed to gunfire. Melee fights are no different either, especially when forced to fight more than one guy at once......with weapons when the camera also works against you. Also, don't even bother using cars, since the driving mechanism is really bad and nowhere as good as the ones in Saints Row or Sleeping Dogs (and to think you have to RACE with these controls). Your only bet is to walk to your missions, however your character 'runs' so slow that it's not even worth it. And then there is the textures. Usually, looks mean nothing to me when it comes to games, but that does not excuse it from having spasms during the gameplay. And the worst part? The game freezes at the most inappropriate times.

True Crime: New York City had potential. It really did. It had the potential to outdo True Crime: Streets of L.A. but unfortunately this is not the case here. Not even a rental is good enough for his horribly programmed game. It's best to stay away from True Crime: New York City and stick with the better title in the series: Sleeping Dogs.
