Master Thief Garrett brings back stealth

User Rating: 10 | Thief PS4

Thief is what a stealth game should be.

Over my time playing games I have dabbled in playing stealth games such as Splinter Cell, Dishonored, Hitman, Metal Gear, Assassins Creed and others. All of which I have enjoyed, but never felt like I was playing an actual stealth game. If I was creeping around and made a mistake and was spotted I would run out all guns blazing and half the time it worked.

Upon seeing advertisements for Thief and wanting a game for the PS4 I was inclined to preorder and purchase it. Not having played the originals, I was hoping for a pleasant surprise as I had heard good things about the series and Thief did not disappoint.

At the beginning I was frustrated slightly, until I embraced what the game was about, being a master thief. I tried playing this game like the above mentioned titles but kept dying until I finally settled down and started being actually playing like a thief, quiet, avoiding conflict, and not out for the kill or knockout but for the steal and suddenly I was hooked.

The story had me interested from the get go and I found myself understanding earlier points of the story later on which was great and kept my mind running. The hand to hand combat is clumsy and dangerous, but on purpose as to show that it isn't Garrett's expertise. The real shine through is the fact that given a single weapon, the bow, so many game play opportunities arise and each map presented me with a new situation to use the tools I had acquired.

The game does have it's faults in the fact that some animations were jarring and the AI occasionally would make stupid moves but I found that quite a small factor to the experience that Thief gives. Thief is exactly that, Garrett is no assassin, he is a master thief and I enjoyed every bit of it.
