Swords, magic, a story, AND a new combat system? I'm in!

User Rating: 9 | The Legend of Dragoon PS
Those were my words when a friend told me about Legend of Dragoon on the PS1. I instantly fell in love with it. From it's character models to the incredibly rendered CG cinematics, this game captivated me. LoD used an innovative fighting system based off of "additions". Which meant the days of using an attack and leaving the game to do it's thing were over (at least for this game). You had to correctly time a button press in order to move on to the attack's next strike.
It was new. It was fresh. I liked it.
Critics seemed to hit it MUCH harder... giving it mostly poor scores. However, seemingly due to that fact, it soared in popularity among the gamers themselves. The thousands of us who got the game and gave it a try truly appreciated it. It captivated us and holds us to this day.
I feel like it was under-appreciated and could definitely use a revamping. Maybe put an option in the combat menu when you select "attack" you could choose which "addition" attack to use rather than being stuck with the one for the duration of the battles. One critic complained about overly long battles. I didn't get any of that. My battles were never overly long OR difficult. Some Boss Battles were frustrating, but they're Boss battles. Who enjoys EASY bosses??
I sure don't.
Legend of Dragoon is a challenge. It succeeded where many RPG's failed. Some, even on the hard difficulty settings, were almost laughingly easy.

Would i recommend you give it a shot?
My counter: are you up for a challenge?
If yes: Do it. I encourage you to try.
If no: Don't necessarily. It's not a cakewalk. Try Final Fantasy.

(Disclaimer: I don't dislike Final Fantasy. I enjoy those games. I just find them kinda easy more often than not. :P)
