The Last of Us is a great game on survival that will bring you on a journey you wont forget

The Last of Us is a great game for 2013 which focuses on Joel and Ellie, who must reach a group of rebels called the Fireflies because Ellie holds a secret relating to an infection causing people to turn into fungi-zombies. The plot does a great job explaining what the focus is and really develops character development for each person. I felt sad for Joel's backstory and wanted to push on and ensure Ellie survived in the game. The characters you meet along the way are also fleshed out, so it never feels like you rushed through a slew of characters during the story. The story for me felt a bit short as I beat the game within 2 days of buying it.

The best thing about the Last of Us is the gameplay; you will never have to baby-sit Ellie the whole game as she can take care of herself through most of the game. Combat can vary depending how you approach the situation, you can sneak past a group of bandits or go in guns blazing through a horde of infected if you have the supplies to make it. This is were the Last of Us does well with the survival part, you can hold a small amount of ammunition, health packs, and bombs that you can't play blow your way through the game. It takes some planning on how to approach a group of enemies and deal with the numbers. There was some intense moments that after a brief fire-exchange I tried to scramble away in silence while my enemies silently spread out to find me. The enemy AI is solid as they will try to flank you if you hole up behind a piece of cover or rush you if they know you ran out of ammo; in addition they don't always scream the generic "I'LL FIND YOU!" and will actually stay really quiet to throw you off as to where they are. However the AI for your teammates is a bit questioning. For example while I was silently navigating through a group of Clickers, (who can detect you by sound) Ellie and Tesse just sprint right pass them making a ton of noise yet not get spotted. It's not bad but it just feels weird that they seem invisible to enemies during stealth parts.

Multiplayer is..... well... it's pointless for me, really. I don't understand why Naughty Dog thought there NEEDED to be a competitive multiplayer in it. It's supposed to focus on gathering supplies during matches and surviving, much like the single player, but the matches run so short and the maps and teams are so small that it's pointless. No one searches for supplies and instead just charge at each other and the match usually ends in about 5 minutes. It's not worth the loading screen for me to bother with multiplayer.

The Last of Us is a great single player with probably the best AI I have seen so far in any game. The story is engaging and the gameplay is solid enough for some re-playability (it has a new game+ option when you beat it by the way). The multiplayer is not great but it's not horrible either, hopefully they will add like a horde survival or co-op to it. Do yourself a favour and buy this game.
