A forgotten gem of a racer.

User Rating: 7 | Test Drive: Eve of Destruction PS2
Demolition Derbies in games are a dime-a-dozen. And now, Atari brings home Test Drive: Eve Of Destruction, a racer that revolves around Demolition Derbies. You start off as a up-and-coming racer who just inherited his grandmother's car. So, after you trade in your crappy car for a nice, shiny new one, you go out and beat the crap out of your oppentes. As you win more and more eves, you start to notice that you go up in rank. You come from a unknown driver to the best racer in the country. But, it dosen't stop there. Once you are respected, you can go to a sand-lot and sharpen your skills, a malt shop where you can beat the hot-shots and get there money, a paint shop where you can also buy upgrades for your car, and that is about it. And don't worry, there are alot of race types, from Detention (Where you are in a school bus, and you are trying to destroy every racer.) to Tralier Races (Basically what the title says.) . But, with the good comes the bad. The game feels really confined until you can unlock the places you cant go (Example: The sand-lot.) , and the soundtrack is pretty bland and crappy (But there is a few stand-outs here and there.) Also, even at the hardest setting, i managed to get lots of first place finishes. What is up with that, Atari? But, in order to reward your efforts, Atari has placed in a points system. It calculates how many hits, "kills," (Which is basically destroying another car.) and more. When you reach the ned of one bar, you will be rewarded with a prize, and evantully you will win all the prizes. All in all, Atari had a good try, but with rubber-band A.I. and confinement for half of the Career mode, it feels a little lazily done.
