A remake of an enjoyable arcade game, but is it worth buying?

I loved watching the TMNT TV show and playing the TMNT arcade games when I was growing up.One of those TMNT arcade games was TMNT:Turtles in Time.I enjoyed playing it many times at the arcade and on the SNES.

After all these years later,a remake of this game has been released. Is it worth purchasing this remade version of the game?

Well,yes and no.

I will start with the positives:

-Even all these years later,I think the game is still fun in an old school type of way,and it brings back happy memories.

-It's the type of game that anyone can pick up and play.

-This version gives you unlimited continues(unlike the SNES version which didn't give you enough continues and made you start from the beginning when you used up all your continues).

-The trophies add some replay value, and some of them can be challenging to earn and will make you play through the entire game with all 4 characters.

-The game has online co-op now,as well as the old fashioned multiplayer.

The negative things about the game are:

-I think the game is a bit expensive at 16 AUD,because you can beat story mode in 1 hour, and, survival mode is just story mode with one life, and unless you want to do the multiplayer or trophy collecting, there might not be enough replay value to warrant the purchase price.

-The enemies are a bit cheap with some of their hits, and will hit you right after you get up.

-The voices of the characters don't sound like on the TV show.

-If you're somebody who never grew up watching the TV show, you might not care about the TMNT universe, which will make the price and short length of the game even more of a deterent.

But,back to the general part of the review, just like countless other arcade style beat em up games, you will select a character(which will be 1 of the 4 TMNT characters),and most of the game involves moving from left to right and hack n slash enemies and dodge obsticles such as giant balls that roll at you or demolition balls that drop down from above, electricity that is shot at you from in front of you or from traps on the wall beside you, sections of floor that will freeze you if you walk on them, parts of a pirate ship floor that will hit you in the face when you step on them, and traps in the sewer(which you'll need to avoid while you're surfing at fast speed).

Every level except for level 3 has a boss to battle, who will try their best to kill you quickly with powerful weapons/attacks.

Some levels make you ride a fast moving hovering board across the level at a fast speed, while fighting enemies and dodging the traps/obsticles(which is a nice way to add variation, and to make the gameplay fast at times).

The game's controls features 3 buttons, one button makes your character attack with their weapon, there's also a jump button(jumping is helpfun to dodge traps and to avoid enemies and after you press jump, you can press attack to do some sort of jumping attack at an enemy),there's a button that makes your character perform some sort of special move.

Each character has their advantages and disadvantages. For example,Donetllo's weapon has good reach, but doesn't inflict as much damage.Leonardo's swords have decent reach and inflict a good amount of damage, but Leonardo's attacks are slightly slower than the attacks of Raphael and Michaelangelo who use smaller, faster weapons. Each character has their own special move, which had it's own advantages/disadvantages based on reach, speed and damage level.

Most of the enemies you'll encounter are footsoldiers who will try to surround you(some of them will throw projectile weapons at you),but there is tougher enemies later who can pound you when they get close to you,or robots that shoot lazers, some enemies carry guns, some enemies ride dinosaurs and will breathe fire on you and there's creatures that jump out of the water in the sewer and will dive at you.The bosses are quite tough on any difficulty above the easy difficulty, and you will need to choose the right time when to attack(so you don't get hit by their attacks in the process),and you'll need to figure out how to dodge their attacks(otherwise you will lose a lot of health),and sometimes it's beneficial to be creative with your attacks, such as doing a jump kick on the boss right after they do an attack and miss. The bosses that I remember are in the game include Baxter Stockmen,Metalhead,a mutant creature,Krang, and the Shredder(who is the toughest boss by far).Like,I've mentioned, the game is still fun for me all these years later, but it's very short.

As for the graphics,on a technical level they look better than the original version of this game, and they look smooth and have a bit of a 3D feel and everything looks sharper and more detailed. But to be honest,I like the artstyle of the original version better. But still, the graphics for this version are still nice.

There is a nice variety of environments, such as on top of a construction site and trying to dodge demolition balls,on the city streets,in the sewer,on a pirate ship,in the prehistoric time surrounded by dinosaurs,in a futuristic city(when you're in the futuristic city you'll be high in the air and riding some some sort of board that can hover)and you can see views of the futuristic city that has futuristic structures, futuristic roads and it looks nice.

I don't like the new voice overs though, the characters don't sound like in the TV show anymore, and they sound weak or different, and I can't remember how the music sounded for the original version, and the music for this version is okay I guess.

Overall,if you loved the TMNT TV show, you might appreciate this game, otherwise, you should look to spend your 16 AUD elsewhere.
