I was introduced to Super Mario Bros. in an arcade in Okinawa, Japan. I feel it's here I was introduced to the genius of Shigeru Miyamoto-San. Yet, it wasn't in the arcade scene that this game captivated me, but on the Nintendo Entertainment System 8-Bit. I'll never forget the day: my family bought me the NES and I started hooking it up to our little TV. I turned the power button on and I was just in awe at what I saw: Super Mario Bros. up and running in OUR house! I played for hours needless to say.

Super Mario Bros. introduces the world of the Mushroom Kingdom where Mario and his brother Luigi are tasked with rescuing Princess Peach from the evil clutches of King Koopa-Bowser. The enemies vary from Goombas, Koopa Troopas, Pirahna Plants, Bullet Bills, Spiny Turtles, and Buzzy Beetles on land to the Bloopers and Cheep Cheeps underwater to Lakitu throwing his Spiny minions from the sky. Mario truly becomes even more SUPER when he receives the fire flower from the question mark box or a star which makes him invincible temporarily. Collect coins and green mushroom to obtain 1-ups and there is also a nice little trick in world 3-1 that you can use by jumping up and down on a Koopa Troopa's shell before jumping on the flag to compete the level.

There are eight worlds to traverse although there are plenty of warp points in various levels so the player doesn't have to go through each and every level. One can be found in world 1-2 and the other in 4-2 (I believe). The levels end on 1-4, 2-4, etc and each time you will face the same boss and you'll be told that the princess is in another castle.

The graphics and music fit the game perfectly. The graphics do a good job of convincing you that you are indeed in a different world and I can't think of a more recognizable tune than the Super Mario Bros. theme. Even after all these years I still hear the theme in my head even when I'm not playing it. The game is not overly difficult except for world 8-4 where there is a pattern you must follow in order to reach the final boss. It's not overly difficult just surprising. It's all about the gameplay as Mario is easy to control whether it's running, jumping, shooting fireballs, or swimming. The beautiful thing here is that Super Mario Bros. is not overly complex and beautiful in its simplicity.

Super Mario Bros. changed the video game industry forever and truly launched a video game icon. I can honestly say that whenever I think of Nintendo I think Super Mario Bros. and it is the start of a truly remarkable series. Super Mario Bros. is a MUST PLAY and is really perfect in every possible way. I can honestly say that Super Mario Bros. is THE video game that captured my imagination and forged the love and passion I have for video games now.
