OVERVIEW

Super Mario Bros. was the first game that I have ever played on any console and it was an instant classic for me. In this game you play as the Mario brothers (Mario and Luigi) in their quest to rescue the Princess of the Mushroom Kingdom from the evil Bowser. As you play through the game you will encounter Bowser's henchmen like koopas (turtles), bullets, and fish. Along with defeating enemies you will explore eight unique worlds and have to overcome difficult traps and pitfalls. Super Mario Bros. has definitely set a high standard for other platformer games to come.

GAMEPLAY

The controls for the game are simple but very effective. You move Mario or Luigi by using the D-pad, run by holding down "B" and jump by pressing "A". To defeat most of the enemies you simply have to jump on them. There are other power-ups that you can obtain along the way like the Fire Flower, which lets you shoot fire at enemies, and the StarMan, which makes you invincible. The excellent level design is what really makes this game so great. There are eight different worlds consisting of four levels per world. The fourth level is always Bowser's castle, which is a huge maze, but the other three levels could involve you making incredible jumps, avoiding countless numbers of enemies, or swimming underwater. Each level is unique so the game never gets boring but just remember to finish the level before time expires. With the excellent level design, the difficulty can be very challenging but not to the point where it becomes unfair.

The multiplayer mode lets you play with another friend as you take turns playing through the game. You can both compete to see who gets the higher score. Super Mario Bros. has great boss battles. At the end of every world you are face-to-face with Bowser. You have to try and defeat him while dodging fire and hammers. When you defeat Bowser you'll get a great sense of accomplishment. Once you beat the game you have the option to replay the game on a harder difficulty, which is a nice touch.

GRAPHICS & SOUND

The visuals could of been better for this game. But this doesn't hurt the game too much.

This game has excellent music and sound effects. The music will leave a lasting impression and the sound effects really enhance the gameplay.

CONCLUSION

Super Mario is a game that I find myself playing over and over again because it is such a fun game. Nintendo really created something very special when they made this game and you can't beat the fact that the game doesn't cost you anything.
