Even with added difficulty, The Lost Levels is a fantastic game.

User Rating: 9.5 | Super Mario Bros. 2 FDS
The Lost Levels, in reality, was actually the REAL Super Mario Bros. 2. The Super Mario Bros. 2 released in the United States (and elsewhere outside Japan, like the PAL region) in 1988 was actually just Doki Doki Panic with Mario sprites slapped in. Now, don't get me wrong, Super Mario Bros. 2 in the US was great (if you don't have it, get it NOW!), but the true fan would also seek the version that I am reviewing now. Now that the background is out of the way, let me break down my review into some easy-to-follow pieces.

Gameplay- In my opinion, any true gamer knows that this, not graphics, is the most important part of a game. The Lost Levels offers a unique challenge not offered in the first game. It is quite hard, but beating levels is gratifying in its own right. It is very fun and requires the player to be on his or her toes. This game doesn't have multiplayer, but instead it allows the player to choose whether they want to play as Mario or Luigi. Mario plays like he does in the original, that is, easy to control, and he jumps well. Luigi, on the other hand, can be challenging and fun to play as all at once. His jumps are much higher than Mario's, but he has a hard time getting friction to work with him (i.e. he can't stop moving on the ground well). If you run too hard, you might just slip off a cliff that Mario could've handled. The fun part is that Luigi allows you to access many secret areas that you might not be able to with Mario. You can also jump over end flags with Luigi far more easily, which I learned to do not long after downloading it. Many say Luigi is a harder character to deal with until you are experienced; I disagree as a result of either my years of Mario collecting and playing, or just because I am weird... but I digress. The gameplay is excellent and requires the player to think a great deal more than the first game did. Oh, I almost forgot, there are Poisonous Mushrooms that have the same effect as enemies upon touching them. Whew, that paragraph was an ordeal! 10 on gameplay

Graphics- This game has very similar graphics to Super Mario Bros. (1). Aside from a few cosmetic changes to make things appear more realistic and detailed, little has changed. We've seen better in 8-bit, but we've seen worse. The graphics get done what needs to be done. 7 on Graphics

Sound- The sounds is virtually the same as Super Mario Bros. 1. Sounds fine, and the music is catchy enough to not get annoying. Can get choppy at points.

Value for your money- This is great for 600, yes 600, Wii Points. It is an import, and the extra 100 over the NES standard is acceptable.

So, to wrap up, this game is great. Very replayable and rewarding. Any Mario collecter like myself should download this immediately if they haven't already imported a Famicom Disk System and played it. Do yourself a favor... get it NOW! -Clayfrd
