One of the most punishingly difficult games in the Mario series. And with that said, it's also one of the best.

Let me tell you the back story of why this game wasn't released in the U.S.. Originally, the Lost Levels was called Super Mario Bros. 2: For Super Players!. However, the current president of Nintendo of America declared it too difficult for Americans, resulting in the Subcon version being released in America instead. The true sequel proceeded to be released in Japan, and was finally shown to Americans on Super Mario All-Stars for the SNES. And while "too difficult for Americans" may be a bit of a stretch, this game can annoy you to breaking point, and ALSo please you if you give it a chance.

So, what is it that makes this bab so hard? Well, let's check it out. Level 1-1 is already crazy-difficult, with a new hazard called the "poison Mushroom" that will shrink you or cost you a life. You'll have to do some really quick thinking, or you'll be dead meat! Let that set the tone for the rest of the game... it may seem the same as the original Super Mario Bros., but it is far more difficult, and it's this challenge that make the game exciting. No other Virtual Console game will probably ever be this hard, however, it was a big step for Mario, as it stepped everything up a notch. Invisible hazards, flying Bloopers, and mad time limits will keep those reflexes pumping, and you on your toes!

Some things might be a bit out of place, but because of the great gameplay, it should be just as enjoyable as the original Super Mario Bros.. You will die A LOT in this game, but if you have the patience and heart to go through this, The Lost Levels will be a very nicely-spent 500 Wii Points!
