The best Sonic-related compilation out there right now.

User Rating: 8.7 | Sonic Mega Collection Plus (Greatest Hits) PS2
Sonic Mega Collection Plus, to be perfectly honest, is a must-have collection of Sonic games for the Sonic fans. Why? Well, if you don't have a PS2, you can make do with Mega Collection because all of the best games are on it regardless, but this version is just marginally better due to a few more games being on it.

As this is a compilation, I'll keep this review short. This game pretty much includes all of the Sonic Mega Drive games, barring two – the excellent Sonic CD and the acceptable Knuckles' Chaotix which came out for the Mega CD and 32X. These are the games that introduced not only Sonic and Robotnik to the world, but also Tails and Knuckles. The games mostly consist of platforming – bopping robots on the head, speeding through colourful zones and taking down Robotnik. Not all of the games follow that element, but most of the games are excellent fun.

Not only are there several good Sonic titles, there's also four non-Sonic titles, which I suppose does feel a little bit like a waste because only two of them relate to Sonic mildly – Flicky and Ristar, because Flickies appeared in one of Sonic's Mega Drive games – 3D Blast, and Ristar was based on another original design for Sonic before his creation. So while Comix Zone is an amazing beat-'em-up, I would have much preferred either Knuckles' Chaotix or Sonic CD instead of it. I would have been glad to see the back of The Ooze as well; I didn't like it very much. Some Game Gear titles are included here as well, though admittedly I only found two or three of them worth playing. The rest weren't that great in my personal opinion.

There's also a section to check out the original manuals, which is a nice touch to the game, and you can also check out some extras – namely some videos for Sonic Heroes, illustrations of the characters and some of the Archie comic covers.

Sonic fans should look into this one if they have a PS2. It's not a massive improvement over Mega Collection for the Gamecube but it's an improvement nonetheless. If you're interested in the Game Gear titles, and want more games, try this one. If you're content with just the primary Mega Drive titles, and you have a Gamecube, you might want to stick to Mega Collection for that console.
