New approach to an already great franchise.

SOCOM Tactical Strike at first caught me off guard. Initially I didn't like the game at all since I was used to the typical way SOCOM FTB 1 and 2 were developed. The game expands on the already present feature of being able to give orders your teammate (or teammates in the case of this game). However, in SOCOM: TS, you as the player never fire the weapon. You are simply the one who orders a four man team around obstacles in VERY large maps (for a PSP). The four man group can be broken up unto two groups, Alpha and Bravo. Furthermore, you can actually give orders to each person in each sub group. It really makes the game much more strategic than previous installments - that I really liked. Please note that I am a person who likes stealth and tactics, much like what has to be done in the Splinter Cell games.

The commands are given real time and you as the player can easily switch between the two groups (if split) to quickly give orders. Another great feature is the "On my command" option. This allows you to select an action for each person, each group, or the entire team in advance. Then, when the moment is right, selecting the "On My Command" option then executes the commands. Its great to set up a sniper shot, plan a few grenades, and set up suppression firing and then watch it all take place once the command is given.

Graphically, the game really shines. The levels are beautifully detailed and extremely large in size for a PSP game. Music in the game is interesting but can be a little repetitive at times. That said, the music is perfectly suited for the action in the game and really adds to the games depth.

If you are a fan of the SOCOM franchise but prefer the run and gun type of game, then you will be very disappointed in this game. However, if you liked the team ordering capabilities of FTP 1 & 2 and don't mind expanding that to the entire group, then you'll really enjoy it. This is definitely a SOCOM game through and through and the change from FPS/3rd Person to all squad tactics presents a new direction for the franchise. If you like stealth and tactics, this game is definitely worthy of a download or purchase. The good news is that you can now download a demo of this game to get a taste of what this game is like. It convinced me to purchase it!
