Like a breath of fresh air in an increasingly stale genre...recommended

You know how it is. You peruse the pages of the review mags, you drift through the daily updates on Gamepsot and occasionally sift through the release schedules. You automatically lock onto and take note of the releases that interest you. Then you work out what you can afford. Some make the "To Buy" list, others fall by the wayside. And occcasionally some sneak totally under your radar, not tripping any of the usual alarms and avoiding your highly tuned game sense.

Sniper Elite did just that. A couple of months ago I got hooked on the hyper realistic Operation Flashpoint Xbox port. I loved the deep realism, the way even ballistics reacted to the elements and gravity. Then I finally completed the 1st Brothers In Arms and discovered the joys of the AI in its sequel, Earned In Blood. And I LOVED sniping in co-op games. Then Battlefield stole all my Xbox Live attention. But I wanted something that combined all of the things I loved about these games.

My flatmate mentioned this game so I checked the reviews......top scores across the board but all warning about the slow pace being suited to lovers of the early Xbox Ghost Recon games...PERFECT. WWII setting, Lone Wolf play in WWII derelict cities, co-op play, online sniping matches, tripwire grenades, tank takedowns with TNT.....its a dream come true. So I picked it up with a discount and whilst me girlfriend wrote her dissertation I spent the weekend belly crawling around Berlin waiting for that perfect shot. And my god does it deliver those. Your patience and itlelligent planning is rewarded with those lethal kills....blew the jaw off a guy in a pillbox last night, his screams drew in a comrade to help him. I shot him through both kneecaps and dropped the 3rd guy who had sussed my position and was flanking me.

This is PROPER AI, it really does work out whats going on at the higher settings and I had some really close calls. Superb work Rebellion!!

The graphics are a mix of the amazing to the ordinary

Online is just perfect. Matches are pitched and nerve wracking with explosives and grenades taking people out just as much as bullets. I got my ass handed to me on a plate by one particular player who ended up wiping out the entire map single handed.....later noticed him sitting proudly in 3rd place on the global leaderboard...I have much to learn!!

All in all I can't recommend this enough, we need more games with this much passion put into them. If you like Brothers In Arms, Ghost Recon, Flashpoint, Rainbow 6 or any war game that requires thought and temawork then this should be top of your list!!
