Still has some of the charm I remembered, but doesn't hold up well enough to compete with other recent games.

I loved this game back in the day - I'd been reading for a while about Sim City on the PC, and was really anxious to try it. This version, with it's simplistic (relatively) inputs and Nintendo themed rewards (Mario Statue), took up a ton of my time, and was a great gaming experience.

Since then, I've held it up as a kind of gold standard - remembering it as having clean, simple graphics, and elegant gameplay where cause and effect were clear.

So much for human memory :)

The graphics are extremely pixellated - it looks like a definite port of western PC art, as opposed to Nintendo's typically clean, easy to read style. And the cause and effect seems way more random than more modern games like Sim City 4.

Don't get me wrong - I did have fun with it for several hours - and if I didn't have so many great games competing for my time, I'd spend even more. But given all of the other options available right now, this is one I probably could have skipped. (beyond just scratching that retro itch :)
