Surreal and quite artful

User Rating: 8.7 | Silent Hill 2 (Special 2 Disc Set) PS2
Very few games are as sensually stimulating as Silent Hil 2. On most aspects of the original game, SH2 has drawn from and improved. I still prefer SH1 because it's low-budget quality makes it a bit more charming and spooky, but SH2 has an edge over all of the SH games in its soundtrack. Akira Yamaoka is one of the greatest music composers in the gaming industry, and this game contains what is arguably his best work. From heavy industrial crescendos to dark seething ambience, to Smashing Pumpkins-esque rock, the somber landscapes and monsters look even more disturbing, often reminicent of a Tool video.

It plays well, though the camera tends to be more focused on capturing the scenery than helping with the often-times-awkward controls. Certain abilities, like firing off a gun, actually handled better in the original. The game is very dark, and mostly lit by a dinky pocket flashlight, but that only adds to the overall eeriness of the game.

You will want to play this in the dark. The experience of Silent Hill is very moody, and the creepiness of it really works wonders getting under your skin. You will jump at least one or two times every time you sit down to play it, assuming you have a pulse.

Overall, one of the best early PS2 games around.
