Start/Select - WOW Panda Expansion Dated, Gabe on Windows 8
- Jul 26, 2012
Mark tells us when we can play with Warcraft pandas, and explains why Gabe Newell dislikes Windows 8.
The only reason I'm looking forward to Windows 8 is for my tablet, but I would never put that crap on a desktop.....ever.
Blinkin heck, draggin' that panda crap out alot. I'd move to Linux to play games if they could get all the games up to now working on it, I don't like the look of windows 8 already because of all that touch screen / scrolling crap, it's like the iphones etc.
@deadpeasant That's how you say DELUXE not DOOOO LUUUXXX!!! As the Americans seem to say it! It's a French word and that's ow to say it!
I was busy hating your guts for bashing pandas...so I didnt get anything from this episode of start/select.Also its Zynga...not Zygna...and you need a shave/shower because no one will mate with you...mate.
What's wrong with his attitude? This is how 90% of British people are for about 90% of the time. You just don't tend to see it in the media. I find it refreshing - yes, pandas are shit, and no, nobody gives a toss about Nintendo's sales figures.
Keep it real.
Microsofts biggest problem with Windows (and pretty much all their software for that matter) is each iteration attempts to dumb down the product to attract a wider user base. Which means that those of us seasoned users have to learn an entirely new animal each time we "upgrade" to a newer version. It also means that NONE of it is intuitive any more for anyone with a modicum of sense about them who has used a PC in the last 30 years. Good luck figuring out the simplest of functions. I think I had an easier time using DOS in the '80s as a kid than I do using Windows now as an adult that has to use MS products as part of my job.
I think Gabe Newell is a little too worried about Windows 8. Let's put it this way. Windows 8 will tank. It's terrible. It's awful. It makes Vista look like a weekend holiday in the tropics. It "really" is that bad. Here's a small example. Let's say you want to shut down your computer right now. It's 2 clicks. Just click Start and Shutdown. Done. But not in Windows 8. Nooo. From desktop it's a minimum of 6 clicks.
Tile Start -> Click your account name (Oh and that whether you're on your online or local account... Yeah, look that one up.) -> Click Logout -> Wait to be logged out -> Click splash screen -> Click Power Button Icon -> and "Finally" click Shutdown.
And just one tiny example. It took me at least 30 minutes to figure out this new procedure to shutting down the computer and I'm a power user.
Desktop has been ruined. You can't do anything from just your desktop anymore. No, you have to constantly jump between tiles and desktop to accomplish anything. And because of the heavy handed way of forcing you to use tiles and desktop for even the simplest of tasks, most tasks that would take only a couple clicks on Windows 7 now become many multiples more clicks to accomplish. Your normal Start button from Windows 7 is gone. Everything is done from Tiles which is a nightmare. You know it's bad when a major company, specifically Stardock, takes it upon themselves to create a mod for Windows 8 to put the Start button from windows 7 back into windows 8 and then puts it online for anyone to download for free. Don't believe me? Here's the link: www.stardock.com/products/start8/ .
Tiles suck. The whole tile navigation system is clumsy and ill conceived. It took me 20 minutes to figure out how to get my "full" list of applications appear and that was only because I tried the search box and then the list appeared. I still haven't figured out how to get the full list without having to use the search box.
Apps are terrible. Want to use Windows Media Player? Well first you load the app, but then you end up on a store page. In order to open your own music, you have to use an open file option on the bottom. Still haven't figured out how to get in my proper music library like on Windows 7. Fail. Want to use Internet Explorer. Oh well now you're in for a treat. First you go into the app and what do you get. Well what's the best way to describe it. Anybody remember WebTV. It's like that except far more basic. Want to right click to save a picture. Can't do it. No, you need to go into the options and tell it to open internet explorer on the desktop where you are then taken to the desktop and the page is opened then you can finally use right click commands again. But does it close the original internet explorer app in the process. No. Which means you now have 2 internet explorer programs running at the same time.
Which brings us into a new issue... Getting out of and closing apps. First you get into an app but want to get out. Well there's no X to get out. No, you have to instinctively know to hit the windows key on the keyboard to get out of the App. This took me 10 minutes to figure out. So you're out of the app now, but is the app closed? No. No, now you to go to the desktop move your mouse to the upper left corned to get a panel that shows all running apps and every app you've gone into and out of are still running. Now you have to right-click on each one and close them one by one. God forbid all running applications would show up in one location on the taskbar like in all previous iterations of Windows. No, now you have to know where to find a hidden panel to find and close them when they should have shut down when you left the apps in the first place. And if you don't know how to do that, well your only option to kill them via task manager. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that a major complaint people have about android phones with apps not shutting down when closing them. Aren't unneeded constantly running processes that do nothing but slow the computer down a major complaint that many users complained to microsoft about back with Windows 98se.
If you guys don't believe me on these above issues, go ahead and download the beta and run it in virtual machine. Try it for an hour. Or let's see how long you last before frustration gets the better of you and give up.
Gabe Newell, your job is safe. In it's current form, Windows 8 is a travesty of an operating system. I see it. Everybody I know including friends who (like myself) work in the industry and have tried working with Windows 8 see's it. We've all discussed it in depth and not one of us is happy about it. I'm happy with Windows 7 and zero intention of moving to Windows 8 when it comes out. And I have complete confidence that the community uproar that windows 8 will incite, will make the uproar that Vista caused seem like nothing more than a fart in wind.
@bignick217 Holy wall of text! How can they release such a bad windows?! And why do they feel the need to do it every couple of years...when as you state in your detailed description...is a total fail-no innovation,no improvement-giants in the industry do work in mysterious ways.Just like blizzard releasing the hugely dissapointing sequel to Diablo 2.
@NervoZa lmao... Sorry, couldn't help it. I've been wanting to get that off my chest for awhile. The worse news is... What I actually took the time to write about Windows 8.... is only the tip of the iceberg. Check out some of the reviews online. Nobody really has anything good to say about Win8.
I'm quite intrigued with the question interaction devices that will replace keyboard and mouse. I do share the idea that touch isn't the future but a different kind of interaction yes probably. For example mousses are much more precise than touching stuff, no matter how good is your touch screen. We'll see.
Wow, i have never seen such irresponsible journalism, luckily it was meant to be in fun (i hope) and to release some anger, this boy obviously has issues. I mean making fun of a creature who is so close to extinction through no fault of its own. Yes pandas are slow creatures they did not need to be fast as all they do is eat a weed that without the pandas would have taken over China a millennia ago, but their slowness is not the reason for their downfall it is the humans destroying their homes for cheap "eco" friendly wood, I guess "eco" does not include pandas. Also all animals sleep with their families including your cats, Mark.
If Steam will launch on Linux like on osx then i just can't wait. Got Steam running under wine so i will finally eliminate that problem. All hail Valve.
I honestly cannot wait to see the sales from "Mist of Panderia." I'm looking forward to Blizzard announcing it as one of their worst, and to think that they said Pandas were originally going to be the new race in "The Burning Crusade" expansion. smh..

It is the law of nature. Pokemon has demonstrated that. The cuter and prettier you are, the less powerful and the more worthless you are in battle. Only a fortunate few are exempt from this law.
I'm one of those linux gamers and the *only* reason I have never gone Linux only is because of the games. This has been an issue since the beginning of time (or when the internet began).
Windows 8 metro needs to burn in hell. Whoever thought that main stream desktop users would use metro was obviously drinking on the job.
Didn't know panda's were that useless lol. Ummm... why are we saving them from extinction again. Seems like their not keen on surviving anyways.
