Johnny takes a look at the server woes hitting Diablo III and Capcom's changing approach to downloadable content.
Actually I am surprised that people don't learn from Ubisoft when they introduced their "best DRM" in AC2.
I was kicked from single player mode when server went down.
What ever happened to putting a cd into your pc and playing a single player game?
What a bunch of crap.
First and last online only single player game I buy.
These people can keep their security crap and I keep my cash.
Lots of other good games to play.
I have all the Diablo games and pre-ordered D3 almost 2 years ago.
I only play single player mode.
What a shame.
Zanddar After all the blizzard money has made I doubt they really care you wont do it again lol.
get rid of the camp scarf
The problem with Capcom's DLC policy isn't just that its on disc it's the gouging prices and rather grating idea of what should be DLC. The costume packs for Street Fighter X Tekken are possibly a worse gouging than the DLC characters exploiting SFs hardcore player base. It's exactly the same strategy they had with MvC3 and SF4 in all its incarnations. Asura's Wrath, want the actual end of the game, buy some DLC.
If those characters hadn't been on disc it wouldn't have made a huge difference. It's such a significant chunk of content its hard to see it as something extra rather than something torn out of the game to make some extra money. I suspect all this revaluation means is next time it won't be on the disc and there will be a large compatibility patch rather than rethinking their gouging practices.
I don't have a problem with DLC, I think it's been great for games its just Cacpom has been the worst offender. Shockingly Capcom has also been one of the most progressive in the use of digital content, in particular Dead Rising: Case Zero and Case West being stand alone arcade games.
Certain content that was cut out from the game to be made avaliable for extra money. There I just corrected CAPCOM. Why don't they just cut the entire game out and sell it as DLC?
I was on my way to pay 60? for a copy of Diablo 3. Then I found out about servers crashing and permanent online single player. When I pay 10% from my monthly wage for a copy of a game with no money back guarantee, I expect this to work perfectly from the first minute I begin to play till I finish it. Can you guess now who´s gonna wait for a pirate release or for an offline single player? I prefer to wait for free than to wait paying or to get interrupted when I enjoy more playing by technical problems of people who already cashed my money.
Diablo is great....server trouble was minimal...Im playing from Bulgaria....dont care if it took some guy 12 hours to beat...I will savour this meal...for a long...long time!
Diablo looks sexy
Diablo 3 is incredible.... Server issues is expected....and I'm not an impatient person. I also LOVE the fact that the game is online and authenticated because that way these games that we love so much actually require you to purchase it and give the $$ and respect back to the makers. Go ahead and make a stupid comments saying Blizzard has millions / should have been prepared / they fucked up.... Make your own online RPG or MMO that has MILLIONS log on at the same exact time around the world and let us know if it crashes....Oh wait... you'll never be that creative.
v1nc3winz oh, i see this is anti piracy is it? doesnt work though does it?
i dont pirate games,i agree the developers deserve their money but not for something that doesnt work. i mean, its not as if this company has no experience making games is it?
no, you pay up and praise them on high and good luck to you.
and..dont be insulting, your not really 'creative' enough to pull it off. cheers
eelnarruc v1nc3winz
Yeah, this DRM really requires you to pay. Then why is a friend who pirated it getting to play more than me, someone who paid? I'm tempted to pirate it so that I can play uninterrupted. This DRM does nothing but encourage piracy.
v1nc3winz Yeah, millions who want to log on at the same time. So, say it's 2 million - that's 2 million times $50 in revenue. That's a lot of money - some would say that's more than enough money to make sure you've got servers with sufficient capacity that to allow people who you're charged money to actually use their product.
The kind of defence you put up is the worst kind i.e. if you can do better then do better. When you go grocery shopping and find you've bought fruit that's not fresh then you should fly yourself to the country of origin and get it yourself if you think you can do better. Go to a restaurant and don't like the food? Well cook some yourself, how lazy of you! Buy a computer to find it breaks a few days later? Tough, you should have built one yourself if you expect better.
So yeah, if I do ever make an online authenticated game after becoming amazingly creative I hope you don't buy it. If you get any problems I won't want to hear about them, go and make your own yeah?
v1nc3winz get off blizzard's sac
constant internet connection for a sp game? then it doesnt work?
blizzard can shove this crap where the sun dont shine,i'll keep my money thanks. cheers
DLC nowadays pisses me off. I'm lead to believe that a couple extra characters put such a financial strain on a development team that my 60$ purchase wasn't enough? Especially when the extra couple characters were planned at the beginning of the development cycle? And all the content fit on the disc anyways? I smell BS
Now that I think about it, there's been a lot of talk lately about next-gen consoles rumored to require always-online...
And the best argument against was always "what if the servers go down?"
Yet another striking example.
NadCAtarun I know! I think it would be very stupid/ annoying for them to have a constant internet connection required. Its not just servers that could go down, what if your internet is playing up also? then you are really screwed.
I'm still waiting for D3 to be delivered. With luck, I won't get to see Error 37 at all. ^^
DLC used be something that developers gave us a year or so after the main title once it had become apparent it was a hit. That's the way it should be done. If there's game content that's ready for use on day one it's hard to justify selling it separately.
On the other hand Nintendo, with the the Pokemon franchise (one of my greatest passions :D), has always employed the dubious strategy of releasing two or three nigh on identical games in the hope that we will buy all of them and this doesn't seem to be a controversial issue.
Who are all these idiots who thinks this will be a simple crack?
many processes are handeled by the Server, servers, items, saves etc...
it took months before any MMO had a private server, and that is what you would want for diablo 3, for yourself. provided you did pay for the game originally.
this always online realy forces people to choose piracy.
Ahhh, constant-internet-connection requirement. Promoting piracy since its conception. Fortunately I haven't had much time to sit and play D3 yet, but if they are still having server issues come Thursday morning, I will find a crack to at least let me play the single player campaign. Looks like there already is one, though I don't know if it works. LOL, on the launch day! See how well that stops piracy?
Well thanks for telling me about Dragon's Dogma. I was on the fence because I knew Capcom would pull that crap.
Guess I'll wait for Super X-Type Gunmetal Dark Sniper xX420Xx MLG Gold Edition Dragon's Dogma.
I find it fascinating how much people are complaining on the diablo forums (not that their complaints aren't justified). The first downtime had about 750 pages of posts in 23 hours, which meant 1 page every 2 minutes, that equates to 1 posts every 10 seconds.
The most recent one has only been on for 2 hours, and there are already 267 pages, which means every minute, 2 pages are created, or a post every 1.5 seconds.
Math is fun!
377988 Wouldn't it be awesome if disgruntled fans took down the forum servers as well, by sheer volume of hits? I mean awesome as in awful, yet hilarious. ^^
Damn, I'm sorta glad that I didn't get Diablo 3. Probably because my computer is pretty bad, to put it kindly.
Anyway, I think DLC is DLC. But I do feel that gamers should be allowed to hack them because the publishers did make an unfair method of transporting DLC. Day 1 DLC is still a piece of s*** though.
Could "Error 37" be the new Marauder Shields?RIP Marauder Shields
Stop buy these fucking games, idiots. The only way to stop these companies from punishing us for the acts of a few pirates is to stop rewarding their Draconian security measures with our money.
Awww he clearly is a 'yote :3
But f*cking damn it, the problem isn't that the DLC is on the disk, that's common, all windows 7 disks are the same, irregardless of if it's ultimate or normal.
The problem is that they made a DLC BEFORE the game was released.
I know about game development, and what takes longest time is the coding and bugfixing/balancing.
Costume/palette swap/cosmetics is ok for a DLC, but not anything that changes the game like more units, weapons, maps, gamemodes etc.
vicke32 You just contradicted yourself. Just saiyan.
it will be even more interesting when pirates crack it...
The rage-quit montage made me LOL..and yep..Diablo 3 blew up its own servers...is this really suprising to anyone? gotta give the game a moment to mature, it was just released...patience:) or none..soon all will be smooth and playable...however i do agree with Jak's rage about being forced into certain situations as a gamer such as online subscriptions and other "required" things just so dev's can get more filthy rich...i just want to have fun playing addictive ass videogames, and not get exploited in the process..pleeaaase.
Rosscalion I wish devs were the ones getting filthy rich... I'm guessing it's investors and shareholders... People who didn't have a hand in the making of (and don't give a sh*t about) the game.
thanks a lot Blizzard! Instead of playing Diablo III I had to go outside and have a jog and play football to get rid of my frustration. You ruined the day lol...
No, but seriously you fucked up fantastically...
I'm so tired of disingenuous companies. I'm tired of bull crap contracts. I'm tired of being roped into stupid required expansion packs, DLCs , and online subscriptions. I paid $60 for Diablo 3 and I can't play it offline. It's a copy of intangible data on a 30 cent DVD with a 5 dollar book and cardboard box taking up physical space in my house and I don't have access to it. FU Blizzard I'm going to charge you hourly for mental suffering and you owe me a new monitor too.
This is Wensea10's opinion but downloadable content is seriously becoming overhyped!
What the 'Diablo 3' developers should do is put the game within consoles.
Wensea10 that would ruin the franchise. If they do it is only about money.
Wensea10 That sure wouldn't give their servers a break. ^^
Plus, it'd require a serious overhaul of the interface. Diablo's all about mouse input, if I'm not mistaken.
Dragon Dogma....on the list..-_-
Just because Capcom says they are "re-evaluating" on disk DLC doesn't mean they will be getting rid of DLC or even day one DLC for that matter...
paladin125 they just saw the sales and they want to make a last stand to get players to buy it.
paladin125 Yeah, I'm hearing "We'll make sure nobody notices next time." ^^
no online requirement would have meant this wouldn't have been an issue...
cirugo nice Blizzard! Thank you for letting me playing the single player!
After 4 Launches with WOW and countless patches you think that Blizzard would be able to get a launch right. They have been doing this since 2005 and have had 2 months for release preparation...not really any excuse for this.
minijeffro they always have server problems at first. I will buy it in 6 months when it is fixed.
Hello there!! Anyone else tired of all the British accents on this website?
