One step too far...

User Rating: 7 | Saints Row IV X360
The premise is simple...

You are the president and leader of the most bastardized gang in the world. Following the same song and dance of Saints Row the Third, you must perform ridiculous stunts and fight absurd enemies in order to take over Steelport.

One catch however....

An alien has constructed a matrix-esque version of steelport after enslaving the human race and has dropped you in a world where the saints brand means nothing. The only solution is to "break" the simulation by committing acts of chaos and destruction throughout the city. Adding tot he chaos, you absorb abilities that allow you to run at super speeds, leap like superman, and hurl fireballs like Ryu.

Any other day, the idea sounds like a playground for great joy, but with the addition of superpowers, the need to be at street level for ANYTHING turns into a serious grind fest.

The characters are references from older games, the scenes are references from older movies, and the humor centers around only that. For those that have not seen a certain game/movie/movie star in the past, most jokes fall short and hollow.

I personally enjoyed the references. But having to explain to my wife the plot to the movie "They Live" made me the only catered audience in the game. Shame really.

But that is not to say the super powers made things fun. Nothing brings me more joy that telekenetically hurling an enemy into space. The lines of dialogue between characters were hilarious and plentiful.

The only real concern I had was the fact that Steelport was not real, leaving you with a feeling of emptiness no matter how much of the map you take over.
