Minecraft Review

  • First Released May 10, 2009
    released
  • X360

Less isn't more in this updated port of Mojang's indie sandbox hit.

It's immediately apparent after digging into Minecraft on the Xbox 360 that the platform is well suited for Mojang's first-person sandbox-style building adventure. From comfortable controls and the effortlessness of jumping into multiplayer co-op over Xbox Live, to detailed in-game tutorials and a more user-friendly crafting system, this updated yet scaled-down port of the indie hit is deliciously accessible. Total newcomers to the game will no doubt find themselves blissfully swept away by the many opportunities for open-ended creativity found throughout the Xbox 360 edition. While coming to this version after spending lots of time playing Minecraft on PC is a jarring and disappointing experience, the joy of free-form exploring, building, and adventuring in randomly generated blocky worlds is nicely reproduced here.

Now Playing: Video Review - Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition

The good news is that the essence of what makes Minecraft so absorbing is left untouched. From the second you spawn into your first 3D world, you're punching trees to harvest wood, digging deep into the underground to mine resources, forging handy tools, battling creepers, and building fortresses to year heart's content--or not, depending on personal preferences. You're free to do as you please, unfettered by preconceived objectives, and the slow pace of exploration is balanced by the fun that comes from gradually figuring out the style of play that comes naturally to you.

New built-in tutorial menus and in-game help pop-ups also do an excellent job of explaining the core mechanics early on, which means you won't have to fire up a Web browser and consult a wiki to figure out basic elements. This makes it much easier to get a feel for the game quickly, while also keeping the deeper elements hidden for you to uncover on your own during your travels.

Trading in the mouse and keyboard for the Xbox 360 controller is a comfortable transition. While you can't sprint in this edition, a minor problem that sometimes turns long-distance travel into a plodding trek, navigating the world and tackling the many tasks available is an otherwise fluid affair. One of the biggest improvements is the redesigned crafting system that streamlines the item-creation process and makes managing your inventory a lot more digestible. Instead of dropping individual resources into various formulas on the crafting grid to see what you get, all you have to do is open up the crafting menu and select the item you want to build. Hitting the craft button pulls all the necessary materials from your inventory automatically and creates the item. Any materials you're lacking are highlighted in red, which is helpful for tracking them down. It's great to not have to memorize item recipes, and you can forge the gear you need a lot faster using this well-designed system.

Crafting is a lot more streamlined on the Xbox 360.
Crafting is a lot more streamlined on the Xbox 360.

Minecraft can be a real blast when played solo, but it's often a lot more fun when you've got friends messing around in the world alongside you. Setting up a proper co-op game on PC is a patience-draining nightmare that requires extra software downloads, server configuring, and far more irritating hoop-jumping than the average person has patience for. Multiplayer is a whole new deal now, thanks to the ease of access and functionality of Xbox Live, which allows for seamless drop-in co-op and party chat. You can invite friends to join your worlds-in-progress or leave them open for others to hop into while you're playing.

Either way it's a good time, and the lack of heinous setup mumbo jumbo is a welcome change of pace. Going one step further, the 360 edition also features split-screen co-op for up to four players. If you've got a large enough screen, a big comfy couch, some tasty beverages, and good grub, then this is the way to go for party play.

Unfortunately, a few excellent updates aren't a good trade-off for all of the content from the PC version that's missing. The 360 edition is a port of an older pre-Adventure Update Beta version of the game, which means the features, items, and updates that didn't make the cut this time around are pretty significant, and it shows. The variety of unique biome environments is limited, certain craftable items and resources aren't available, and some of the more exciting creatures are absent. There's no hunger or experience system, no alchemy or weapon buffing, and no Ender Dragon to hunt down and defeat. The free-form Creative mode is MIA too, leaving Survival mode as your only play option.

Eat your heart out, Robinson Crusoe!
Eat your heart out, Robinson Crusoe!

Equally disappointing is that maps are no longer infinite. Wander too far in any direction, and you bump into an invisible wall. There's still plenty of room to explore and build, but the world now feels more like a caged-in biodome instead of a sprawling realm to map out. At least you can still build a portal to travel to the hell-like Nether dimension, yet even that region is constrained too. All of this will be less of an issue for new players who've yet to taste the PC extras, and some may even welcome the simplicity. But that same simplicity is enough to spur longtime Minecraft vets to stick with the PC version--at least until downloadable content either fills in the gaps or offers enticing exclusive updates.

While plenty of concessions were made to bring Minecraft to the Xbox 360, it's good to see that the overall depth and flexibility that made the original so engaging aren't completely sacrificed. However, despite the nice multiplayer options, the improved accessibility, and the refined crafting system, the missing elements are a sizable backslide from the PC version. But is the core foundation still a lot of fun? Absolutely--if you temper your expectations.

The Good

  • Core gameplay is still as addictive as ever
  • Updated crafting system rocks
  • Excellent multiplayer options

The Bad

  • Missing a lot from the PC version
  • No Creative mode
  • Worlds are smaller and constrained

@lpsyco666 The game was released in 2003 for the PC. It's a game for people who enjoy being creative. And judging by the God of War icon, you're a Sony fan, so all you ever care about is "the best graphics." Sony Fan Boys angry it won't be released on PSN :p jajajaja that

You are a pefect example of what western gaming has become and what we should be getting away from. Japan would be a good start, where gameplay is placed above graphics. Why don't you create your own game where you have no quests, no storyline, nothing to do but walk around and look at beautifully captured scenery?

@c0kemusheen

I'm sorry did I sleep through the hype surrounding BF3 and Crysis 2 and how they were so revolutionary? No, I was there and that's always one of the first things said about a game here, the graphics. Graphics are important but why does it get soo much attention in the west? People (mostly PC players) ripped on Skyrim constantly about thier game engine and how they are known for making less than stellar looking games. Really?

Coming from someone who left a very dismissatory comment with nothing to say really, I wonder how was what I wrote a "foolish generalization".

@devastion913 i have to disagree with that, most eastern style games are horrid. everything is "anime" style. huge eyes, crazy, pink hair, girls with globe like boobies. seriously, did every last single f**king animator/game designer in japan go to the SAME art school? where's the variety?

Your right, no games made in the west have women with crazy pink hair or huge tits. Or better yet, none of the gamers make nude mods for that game (Left 4 Dead, Saints Row 3) if the game dosen't already have such things in it already (Dante's Inferno, The Witcher 2, God of War). The art style you described is used a good bit in Japan made games but it's not in every game like to insinuated. If you think they are you really don't know where alot of titles are made.

@lpsyco666

And all of those games do what? The gameplay is better than the graphics and, in Dark Souls case, the gameplay is good enough to keep you playing through all the problems the game had after launch while the technical slowdowns are still there in certain areas. You missed my point completely so I'll explain it. You can have the best looking game on the planet but if the gameplay sucks the game will suck. Is that better?

@lpsyco666 all games are far from perfect (there's all ways a few things even if very minor, nothing is perfect) especially Deus Ex human revolution, it's an aweseome game loved it but it's has some big flaws that aren't acceptatble like the loading times on console, the bad AI when your sneaking sometimes and the weapon storage. and the stripping of RPG elements for a more generalized audience, you could play the whole game without "leveling up" besides hacking in a few places

@lpsyco666 The graphics aren't bad. They're made that way to suit the gameplay. In fact, if they tried a more realistic approach to graphics, the game would be horrid.

If you want the game to look better, get it for the PC and get a realistic texture pack for it instead of complaining.

@lpsyco666 are you from the 90's? These days not everyones so concerned with how realistic something can look :)

If you thought about it you might see the point of the graphics style is to facilitate simple game play and most importantly not colour in the world for you.

@KC_Hokie Unprofessional in what way? If you don't offer reasons, your claim remains meaningless. In any case, what he says seems to be spot on: the game doesn't have the same bells and whistles as the PC version, but the basic strengths of the original are still present in the XBox version. What's so unprofessional about that claim?

@julg yeah but on that logic why dont we get the full version? :S I dont see the sense in adding an awesome tutorial mode only to strip out major features that the pc version has. It's not as if this is one of those cases where the 360 cant handle everything the pc has.

There are updates coming to get the 360 version up to the PC version. An update the Beta 1.7.3 is coming very shortly which adds a lot of things. Most likely taking their time building it up to make sure there are no major game-breaking bugs.

Look people, this is Minecraft on the Xbox-360 RIGHT NOW.

Yes there is going to be updates, yes these problems will perhaps be addressed later said updates, but this is Minecraft on Xbox-360 RIGHT NOW. Fresh off the download. They review it as it is at the time of release and if memory serves me correctly put under videos updates on the game telling what has been added or fixed. Seriously, sorry, but they aren't about to simply review the game and just update the score every time a new version is released. That's rather silly to be honest.

Look, just know this; Minecraft (IMO) is one of the best games of 2011 and I'm very happy that Xbox-360 users get a chance to experience the fun. So what if GS gave it a 7. 7 is not a bad score, ever heard of a 3? THAT'S a bad score. Plus if you know that most of these issues will be fixed in future updates then why and how does a score possibly impede your judgement on whether or not to get it? I hope it doesn't do anything to your outlook on the game. Overall, to sum it up: The game at the moment is not as good as the PC version, nor do I believe it ever will be, but there will be supposed updates along the way that should make it closer to the PC version as best they can. Get the game, don't get the game, it doesn't matter just don't go fussing over the review because the score isn't higher because of "possible updates" just know that this is the game now but it (hopefully) will get better along the road.

@Goyoshi12 The mediocre score is Mojang's own fault, and they really do deserve all the lowish scores that their ports have been given. It's simply not ok to release the same unfinished game time and time again, just to make some quick cash and then add some semi-good updates down the line. Even the PC version is more or less incomplete and even flawed in some places at this point. Most importantly, the game simply doesn't know exactly what it wants to be and do, and without mods on the xbox that is quite a concern.

People shouldn't accept it, and definitely not at the price they ask for.

@The-Rekve Regarding your point about Mojang deserving the relatively low scores because they've released an unfinished game: Mohjang didn't port Minecraft to the 360.

You forget this isnt some multinational corporation trying to gain millions of dollars quickly this is a small team trying to acheive everyones hopes with a game they made just for fun. If you didn't notice that there is massive restraints on the x-box compared to the p.c look at the graphics between battlefeild on the two if you expected a game from the p.c just as good on the x-box Ill say your deliusional. Because of this Mojang will have to make xbox specific updates for minecraft its not simple copy and paste. Although i would hope updates woulld be free rather than paid for i don't need to all of a sudden not allowed in my friends world because i don't want to spend $15 bucks on an update this would be money grabbing and create another money grabbing corporation that is not user friendly.

@blackwing55 You dont have to be a multinational corperation to try to get money from people. Look at the iOS port. And they DO make millions and got it quickly. If they just wanted to "achieve everyones hopes and dreams with a game they just made for fun", then it definitely shouldnt be as expensive as it is, or shouldnt even be ported as many times as it has.

And you review a game based on its current form, not possible future updates.

@hippiesanta I will hold off on this myself, but I can agree this is a concern. I imagine MS will be looking to recoup its cost for having it exclusive, and this is the easiest way to do so.

Notch did say it would all be free, but lets see.

How much would you pay for a texture pack or skin btw? (IF you do) Not a marketing survey just curious.

@DashRender619 Side note, I agree completely about DLC and post release this was one of the issues which I thought of. I will not know how I feel about the updates or DLC, until they are released. If it is at extra costs, then this would suck. It would not make this game terrible, just one of the exploits used by companies today, and more a negative on how games are sold/marketed rather then making this a bad version of the game.

@DashRender619 It is true the PC version is never ending. You can walk for days on end, without an end, this is true. But is there really much of a difference? Do you walk for miles and miles, on the PC version? Is the game any different if I can only play in 1000x1000 map instead of infinite. The size of the map on XBLA Minecraft is great and big, it is annoying/disppointing bumping into one of the walls, I will admit this, and it is more annoying if you have played the PC version to see this limit, but the size of the map is still hugh enough that you can build what you wish, I have never seen anything on PC that is large enough to not fit in the space provided on Xbox. The game play within that map is the exact same, and the enjoyment from the title is the same. My only gripe is, if I did not play or know about PC Minecraft would there be an issue? Would the PC version been rated a 7.5 when it first came out if it had the same limit?

coop is great but there is a serious amount content left out. sure its great but for such a small game (datawise) i dont understand why i am playing minecraft beta again. and why is the world limited? It's really hard for me believe that the 360 can't handle the full version of minecraft ( it definitely can )
