Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D

User Rating: 7 | Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D 3DS
RE: The Mercenaries is simply the mini game you get in RE3, RE4 and RE5 after finishing the story mode. It's more familiar to the 4th and 5th since the RE gameplay has changed.
Take it as an improved Mercenaries that stands alone.

*Gameplay 8.5/10
This plays exactly the same as the modern Resident Evil gameplay with some neat touches, and some getting used to.

Don't worry if you're not familiar with it, you start off with some tutorials to get the hang of running around, shooting, etc..

There are great characters to choose from starting with Jill, Chris or Hunk. All characters have their own melee moves and their own weapons. You can use a characters weapons on another after unlocking them, unless you want to alt purchase them with 10 nintendo coins each, one of them costs 15.

Default Controls
-Holding the R button makes you aim and the Y to shoot, the Y is used to perform a variety of actions like a melee. It can get in the way of your shooting but you can always check out other control types.
Adding the L with the R will make you walk while shooting, you need to get the hang of it at first. Shooting, reloading and healing while on the run can be helpful.
-While holding the X you can choose an expression from the +control pad (thanking, halt, sending out, call out)
(The complements for a head shot, , answering to your partner, calling for help when caught or dying has been all removed unfortunately.)
-A button is to use your herb.
-You can use the +Pad to select a weapon (up and down)
(You can touch the screen to select weapons and herbs too)

While in dying statues you must tap the Y button to recover (in solo) but with a partner you must be saved. The same exact thing with RE5.

Completing missions will unlock certain skills that will help you in the game and make things more interesting, you can select 3 skills at once.

Unfortunately there are no new areas, they were all taken from RE4 and RE5 (and only some of them). It's nice to revisit but the areas you remember are smaller as some paths are closed, adding something fresh would have been appreciated.

Each character has only one alternative costume, you can set him/her up in two different costumes (weapon set & skills)

Duo can be fun but it can get annoying with it's lag. Sometimes actions wont respond quick especially when you're around your partner, it also depends on the connection.

It's the Mercenaries like you seen before with some neat changes and exciting gameplay but the lack of content can be a problem. It offers a 5min demo of Revelations which isn't enough to solve it.

*Graphics 7/10
I was surprised with the graphics, the character models are fine and so are the areas.
Sadly with no cut scenes it won't show off much of it's graphics.

The enemies look fine but when you see them from a distance they get funny and rarely disappear.

Since the 3D is so delicate, it's better off playing in 2D.

For a 3DS they did a great job but it could have been taken care a little more.

*Sound 6.5/10
Background music is catchy and puts you in the action.
There are some old and some are completely new which is a plus!

Unfortunately I can't help but say that the voices sound dreadful, it doesn't sound well. This goes to some enemies too, sounding like cats.

Although it's nothing that really pushes you away, Capcom could have definitely done a better job.

Value 5.5/10
Like everybody expected, Capcom didn't manage to make the mini game a full stand alone game. Giving it improvements, like skills and weapons aren't enough.

There are no leader boards that will push you back to play it again which is very disappointing.
You find yourself playing the same levels over and over with some little changes.

Unlocking medals can take a while but it requires you to play the levels again to maybe get an SS on ever level. This can be fun when skills are leveled up but it still feels like repetition.

You mite manage to finish the levels in 2 to 3 days, depends.

Difficulty can push you away a little unless you love challenges.

Some alternative costumes look wicked and others looks very stupid, putting more costumes would have been fun.

After all it's a great looking game, probably the most exciting one I got but it lacks from content.

Resident Evil: The Mercenaries and the upcoming RE: Revelations should have been together for a home console not a portable one, it would have offered much more.
