I chose underappreciated to classify this game because that's what it is.

Most fans will tell you that Resident Evil 3: Nemesis is their least favorite in the series. I however think it's one of the best in the series.

The game constantly has you on the edge of your seat, mainly because of the very persistant Nemesis, who insists on jumping out of a garbage can or a bag of chips to whap you upside the head every 30 minutes or so. This makes for a really heart-pounding experience.

The difficulty is also just right. Your first play through you'll have unlimited ink ribbons to save, which is a change from most Resident Evil games. You'll also find a generous supply of ammo, as well as gunpowder to put into the reloading tool to make various types of ammo depending on your playstyle. The reloading tool is a neat feature in that it lets you eventually upgrade your ammo to a more powerful type. As an example, after combining type A gunpowder, which is handgun ammo, with the reloading tool 7 times, you can then make advanced handgun ammo with any gunpowder you combine with the tool in the future. Of course you could save all the different types of gunpowder you find to make the various types of grenade launcher ammo.

The second time around playing the game you can play on the appropriately named hard difficulty, which is actually pretty hard. Ammo is very scarce and zombies are alot tougher to kill, so you better get good with the knife to conserve ammo when you can.

However, there is a slight problem with the game in that the setting doesn't quite make sense. Most people won't notice this their first play through as the game is very immersive and distracts you from this key point, but the layout of the city really doesn't work. You'll find streets with cars parked on the side but for some reason both ends of the street are walled off with a door to another area. It just wasn't planned out all that much. You'll just have to assume that Racoon City is made up mostly of alleys.

The only other downside to the game is that it's very short compared to other entries in the series. Nemesis can generally be finished in about 5-6 hours.

All that being said, Resident Evil 3: Nemesis is one of the best entries in the series, and definitely worth owning for any Resident Evil fan. If you're not necessarily a fan it's still worth renting or borrowing from a friend, but you'd do better to try some of the other games in the series to really get a feel for it before you pick up this version.
