I bought this game because every site in the world said it was fantastic. Well, at first glance it is. Good graphics, pretty decent voice acting, and good play control. However, once the gleam comes off, this game is just GTA with horses. I know people will freak out and scream NO IT ISN'T! But...it is. Sorry. A few of the complaints I have is that the story seems to never go anywhere. You go on stupid sidequests that don't really enhance the game. Getting from town to town takes a ridiculously long time because they are so spread out, which lends to the realism but give me a break, I don't want to be riding my horse all night. Speaking of horses, they get tired too often. Yes, again, I realize this is for realism, but for crying out loud, can my horse run for more than fifty feet without me having to slow down and wait for his "stamina meter" to fill back up? This might sound like nitpicking, but when you're on your horse for 70 percent of the game this gets downright annoying.
The main character is kind of annoying too. His gruff exterior and "anti-hero" hero status isn't really believable. You don't ever really seem to care about his predicament, at least I didn't. And certain aspects of the story just seem to be given up on by the game. There is one part where John Marsten (the hero) saves the main girl (Bonnie) from being killed by a hanging. She gets rescued but if you go back into the town where she lives, she's nowhere to be found nor was she mentioned again upon reaching the second part of the game in Mexico. Once in Mexico, I expected the game to speed up, but it actually slowed down. It was at that point, I decided I had had enough of the Old West and sold the game on eBay.
This game was entirely overhyped. It's an enjoyable rental as shooting people has never been more fun and the physics of the horse is amazing. But, the game fails to deliver an unforgettable experience. Don't believe the hype.
