RaceRoom is a remarkable monument to what happens when you go too far with turning fun into a professional experience.

I haven't logged in to my account here in a couple of years. I only did so now to write this for you to read, as RaceRoom deserves all the publicity it can get.

RaceRoom is the absolutely worst racing experience of a life-time. I love the racing genre and i've played them all. This is one of those games that has tons of potential but is ruined by its incredibly boring core game-play and the details of its design-choices. However, it doesn't stop there.

From the clunky, bloated and confusing UI to the hopelessly boring "challenges" of learning the tracks to the rear-wheel driven impossible-to-steer cars you get to drive in your very first race (!), i have never before come across a game in which there were so many different things that i disliked right away. It's as if the developers want to scare you away from the idea of a free racing game and/or donate this product to scientists who are doing patience-research on modern man. It wouldn't surprise me if the developers themselves are scientists who have no idea what fun is in a video game. The multi-player button is grayed out and thus inaccessible, possibly because you're expected to finish all the "challenges" first. Something i would guarantee that 90% of all those who try the game never will. There's no AI to race against, but only single ghosts of times to beat. So who cares about beating a ghost when you get absolutely nothing for it at the end of a race, nor have any fun whatsoever during the race?

Valve are frankly risking the credibilty of Steam to put this "game" into the racing genre. It belongs in the software section along with 3DMark and Folding@Home. It's chores. It's so complex it becomes stupid. It's a huge waste of time as nobody but the most desperately unemployed people in countries no longer with a functioning welfare system looking to win one of the sponsored tournaments to sell the winnings to pay their rent and heating bill will be able to stand for longer than a week. I can't even see the most serious professional race-car drivers enjoying this. There is no fun-factor whatsoever.

If you ended up being disappointed with Gran Turismo 5, stay away from RaceRoom. It's even more boring than you could ever imagine. Simbin Studios have made a shameful hit on the entire racing genre this day.

I you'd like fun mixed into the formula of a free multi-player racer, try something like Trackmania Nations.
