User Rating: 8.6 | Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy PS2
After 16 hours of play, I just finished Psi-Ops: Mindgate Conspiracy. The game was an enjoyable shooter with the interesting addition of Psi powers. These powers allow you to dispatch enemies in many different ways beyond just shooting them and play a key component in defeating the bosses that are scattered throughout the various levels. The graphics are on-par for PS2 games (which is not bad), the game is easy to get into with with different Psi powers added throughout the game in an easy-to-understand (and sometimes comical) tutorial, the save checkpoints are appropriately spaced apart (however not so close to make it easy), and most importantly the story and level design draw you in. If you enjoy getting Key X to open door X only to need Key Y to open door Y (a la Metal Gear) this game isn't for you. The levels begin with an overview on what needs to be done and provide valuable hints on how to accomplish them. While each one is large and don't recycle from previous levels, they are largely linear in nature. This would be a larger problem if it weren't for the Psi Powers that allow you to take out the enemies in a variety of ways (fire, throwing obstacles, throwing people, mind drain, mind control) as well as special units that are immune from many of your Psi powers. I found it a refreshing game largely owing to to Psi powers that boosts this above an average rating. In terms of value, playing full price ($49) is too much to pay for this game, but if you can find it for $10 cheaper like I did, I think you will find it an enjoyable diversion worthy of your attention before the sequel comes out.
