It's not too late, the PS3 is going to be here for a long time, so don't worry about it. Just go indulge yourself with that new PS3 slim and your on your way to become a PSN user! :D
All games have native 720p. Some consoles, like to upscale them to 1080, but like another poster said, it doesn't result in better quality picture and sometimes is a lot worse than native resolution.
