@probable: 11 years. Tempus fugit. Yes it's the weakest entry so far, for sure. Hopefully Stalker 2 will at least surpass this one.

@analgrin: Yeah, I know, but current VR headsets also have shitty resolution (I have an HTC Vive). Supersampling helps, but definitely cranks up the power requirements. Most games I can run just fine without SS (anything else would be an atrocity, since the only regular card more powerful than the 1080 is the Ti variant), but I hate how it looks without SS. So that's basically why I feel the need to upgrade; so I can run higher supersampling settings.

I cannot wait for Valve or Oculus to release a proper 4K (or higher) headset though. Even if that means I have to buy an extra graphics card - assuming Nvidia implemented some kind of clever use for SLI in VR.

@jako998: 3 years should be doable as long as you are willing to turn down some settings eventually.

Gaming laptops are actually pretty viable nowadays, if you have the cash to shell out.

@skektek: I have several high-end gaming PC's (1080 desktop and a 1070 laptop) as well as a lot of other expensive high-end components ($1000+ monitor for example), but I also have a Switch (and a New 3DS XL). I clearly care about the technical side, but I also appreciate Nintendo for what they set out to be. They're not on the bleeding edge of the hardware side, nor do they try to be. For that matter, none of the consoles are. I bought an Xbox One X a few weeks ago, and while it offers very good performance for the price, it's still based on outdated hardware.

I think Nintendo has a healthy philosophy in that they're focusing on gameplay rather than graphics, to put it plainly. I love the 3DS' dual screens, the Wii U's tablet gamepad and the portability of the Switch. Because they all offer something I'm not getting via PC gaming.

The other consoles only interest me if they have exclusives I absolutely don't want to live without. Because if if weren't for the exclusives, they would just be watered down PC's in a smaller format.

@ECH71: If you're not getting a new Nvidia card for a few months, you might want to consider waiting for Volta, since it's slated for an early 2018 release. Waiting for Volta myself, so I can upgrade from my 1080 (only because I have an HTC Vive though, and VR is highly demanding if you want it to look goodish).

@jako998: I have a (secondary) gaming laptop with a GTX 1070 too, but you know you could have built a GTX 1080 desktop for cheaper than what that laptop probably cost you. I paid over $2500 for mine (right after the 1000 series came out on laptops).

Your laptop should last for a good while though, seeing as the laptop 1000 series cards run almost as well as their desktop counterparts.

@sellingthings: Yeah you might be right. Guess we'll see next year. Hoping for a decent boost at least from 1080 -> 1180 or whatever it'll be called.

Electricity is covered by my landlord, so that's never been something I've cared about. But it is true that the 1000-series is very power efficient. I went from a 780Ti, which ate electricity for breakfast, lunch and dinner, so I'm sure I've saved my landlord a couple bucks after I upgraded the card.

I work from home sometimes too, and when I have nothing to do, I usually spend it gaming. Not the worst way to spend part of the work day.

@cornbredx: Agreed. It's the only AC game I've ever really played. Tried a few of the others but could not get into them. But I love pirate themed games, so it was almost a given that I would enjoy AC IV.

@sellingthings: Yeah that's a good idea. Now if they did that, and it didn't introduce any lag whatsoever, I'd definitely get an extra card. I'm afraid you may be right though about the next series only being a marginal upgrade, compared to the 1080 which was as good as two 980's in SLI.

@analgrin: 1070 is also a very good card; I have a gaming laptop with a 1070. It runs Witcher 3 with everything on max, at 60 fps, in 1080p. I'm surprised though that a racing game is able to bring that kind of card to heel, considering my Xbone X runs Forza 7 at 60 fps / 4K (ish at least). Is it poorly optimized?

I just wish Nvidia would release a new GTX series soon. My 1080 is struggling to cope with GPU intensive VR games. 1080Ti is definitely not worth upgrading to from a 1080, so I'm stuck waiting for their new series.

And SLI is not something I want to go for.
