The success or failure of communism isnt about whether or not the citizens of a country are idealists or how they behave. Its a matter of human nature. If you had said that communism would work if human nature itself were to change, that I would agree with (i am also talking about your last post)

pianist

That changes nothing. If the all the people in a collection of individuals ARE communist idealists and there are amongst them people who know how to take care of the essentials of life, then the society can and will survive. Human nature, in addition to agreed, also entails a capacity for rationalization. Some people use that rationalization to develop a sense of morality that demands people be equal and that you use your talents to better others, not yourself. There just aren't very many of them, and that's why communism will fail when you try to apply it to a society of millions.

A society of millions is all that really matters. It doesnt matter if small isolated communes can sustain themseles, I dont think that is what the OP had in mind. Even if we had a world that only consisted of small communes, they would not be able to resist the urge to take each other over and consolidate power.

No we don't.pianist

You don't know that. Most believers in communism are idealists, and they regard collective well-being as more important than money. You can't do that if you value money as much as most people do. Greed and communism don't work out very well together.

[QUOTE="quiglythegreat"]eveyrone in America defines themselves as middle class. all the absurdly rich kids on here even will only admit 'upper middle class'. if you've got the huge HD TVs, all the consoles, a good RIG, a car, and a big house, you are UPPER CLASS. but not to AMeircans, or a good many other people. it's all middle class. poor people will say that they are middle class. the homeless will describe themselves as lower middle class.quiglythegreat

You don't know what you're talking about.

who is above what I have mentioned? having all those things, and being able to pay for them, means you are upper class. the vast majority of the population in any nation cannot afford that stuff. being strained by 'oh, we have to pay for medical school' means that you can pay for medical school on top of all that. that's RICH. who do you think is above you? the monopoly man? goddamn, I mean really, who do you see as being above you?

No, its not. Class is not about money, its about status. Britney Spears is rich as hell but she would still be classified as upper middle class. The upper class is a very exclusive and small group of people who have had money for generations.

Or because either a black man will be president or a woman will be vice president.

No. Regulation is needed to smooth information asymmetries that are always exploited without it. Purely laissez faire capitalism is an unrealistic utopia just like communism.

I dont know if it can "make you" like it but it certainly makes you try a little harder to get into it, which may or may not lead to you actually liking it. It has happened to me many times.

[QUOTE="mysterylobster"]Does anyone still thinks he's a conservative? This bailout is nothing less than socialism at its worst. Guybrush_3

I think socialism at its worst is probably the government forcibly seizing all private property. The hyperbole surrounding this bailout is stifling.

Actually I think that crosses the line into communism.

No, the state is supposed to "wither away" when socialism transitions to communism, thus there would be no state to forcibly seize property. The point is, there is no reason for such dramatic statements.

And right on cue, the stock market DROPS

lol

Netherscourge

The jobs report is out today and unemployment is a lot worse than expected. The drop has nothing to do with the bailout. Plus, the bailout passing was priced in during yesterday's 300 point rally.
