Although I have not tried the demo, I have been able to pull off playing the full game with a weaker system than yours. I even managed to get it to work on a 500mhz p3 with 320mb ram and 6200, but framerates weren't perfect by a long shot.

Homeworld, fighting in the nebula was my favorite part.

Half-Life 2, The sense of emersion.

Battlezone 2, Landing on the alien planet.

But I believe Homeworld wins because after finishing it you get a great feeling of accomplishment. (especially because it was so hard at some points)

Wow that was a great decade of gaming. Lets see...Starcraft, Unreal Tournament, Red Alert, Starsiege: Tribes, Total Annilation, Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2, Uprising 1 & 2, Halflife + expansions, and Battlezone 2.

F.E.A.R - The game had perfect timing for the little girl to come in, also the invisible soldiers from extraction were always following me 0_o.

Doom 3 - Because no one likes to go into a dark room with zombies, trust me...

Carnivores 1 - I still don't understand how the raptors were always able to flank me, turning and having something jump at you isn't cool, and don't get me started on the T-rex

Most of the scary games are best at night with the sound up, which makes the game twice as scary.

I first started playing Pc games at my friends house when I was in 2nd grade, and he had a computer room with 3 window 3.1 comps, and one 95 (which was awsome back then). Loved playing games like oregon trail, prince of persia, and commander keen!

Till we got our own 95 computer, and I was playing Freddy Fish :P

Metroid Prime was one of the coolest experiences ever, with its storyline, soundtrack, and visuals were peak at the time. The Halflife series also has very entertaining games.

I would have to say Knights and Merchants for PC, and also I loved dark colony way back then.
