I played through doom 3, doom 3 ressurection of evil, F.E.A.R, F.E.A.R extraction point, and many other games considered to be scary but non of those freaked me out as bad as Vampire-The masquarade bloodlines. realy good gameplay and story and some realy reaky parts like the ocean front hotel.

Neither of those games were that scary. I would say Silent Hill 2 was the scariest.

doom 3 and f.e.a.r were both awful for horror, i don't know why anyone mentions them

the scariest game i ever played (ever) was the original silent hill on the playstation - the combination of absolute darkness, awesome use of sound and the horrific, disturbing wrongness of the enemies, along with some great (occasional) camerawork really just made me feel genuine fear like i've never felt before - the game evoked genuine fear

on the pc, it's system shock 2 - the game doesn't have the darkness of silent hill, which is probably what puts it second, but it does have the awesome use of sound - it's like they must have spent months testing different noises and tones and pitches until they found the most distrubing, disorienting, wrong noises possible - noises just too awful to possibly occur in nature... system shock 2 also conjures a perfect feeling of isolation and a really oppressive, claustrophobic atmosphere, as well as having fairly scarce resources - meaning every bullet you fire is taking you a step closer to being defenceless, which is a horrible feeling (in a good way)... when i hear that mmmmnoaahh noise and turn to see a wrench flying at my skull, my brain just shuts down and reboots in get out of here now mode, and i find myself running blind through the spaceship - again, the game evoked genuine fear

after that, it's gotta be aliens vs predator - marine campaign - it has some of the same feelings as silent hill and system shock 2 again, the darkness and the great use of sound (the blip blip heartbeat pulse of the motion sensor) - and the enemies are quick and lethal, so when one leaps out, my brain would go oh god and i'd find myself running around like a headless chicken firing wildly into the air - but i never really felt actual fear while playing the game, just a combination of high tension, and panic
little else is noteworthy in the fear department for me, but i am a bit of a purist - the whole boo! shock tactics that most horror relies on really doesn't appeal to me, i don't care for monsters jumping out at me

I don't know if they were really all that scary, but both FEAR (& its expansion) and Alien vs Predator2 had some good moments that made you jump a bit.

yeah pretty much - bioshock is essentially a spiritual system shock 3 - ea owns the rights to system shock, so bioshock is a new setting and story and ip as a whole, but it's still the same essence

if bioshock can capture the atmosphere of system shock 2, bioshock will soon be coming up on a lot of scariest games ever lists

Condemned people ffs :) Very good game.

Fear i didnt find scary but still fun game, doom 3 was an awesome sci fi horror game that did give me some scares.

Other then those, vampire the masquerade bloodlines does have some nice scary parts in it too.

Splinter Cell double agent for the pc is pretty scary to try and get to work :D

Quake 4 can give you a few scares but nothing that big.

My 4 year cousin was over a few years back when I was playing Diablo, the music alone gave him nightmares for weeks. Silent hill Series is the closest thing to being "Scary" for me.

Alien vs Predator 2! I really get scares when play this........Imagine u are space troopers trying to finish u'r mission but there are alien and predator out there, ready to haunt u.....U'll also can hear scream for ur teammate which sadistically kill by predator and u'll also see your team mates hanging 3 meters from ground which has brutally murdered and the blood still dropping......Gyaaaaa......I just play half of it n uninstall it quickly.........SCARY!!!

Well...F.E.A.R is also scary, not only the games but also the system requirement......*SOB * I can't get it to the highest detail....too bad

hmmm, a few levels in area 51 made me jump, like when all of a sudden about 10 guys just leaped through a door straight at you, and they look so weird.

ummm, silent hill has to be the scariest. the utter darkness, and the pure terror

then, the game armorines. it was an obscure game that made you fight bugs. but they had pitch black levels, and huge spiders and other......things that would come out of nowhere, and somtimes you had to swap to an infrared vision to see invisible giant spides which got quite annoying.

Okay, I will sound wimpy for this, but I get scared as all hell when the damn flood drop from the ceiling in front of you in halo. god damn!

FEAR wasn't scary at all, the cutscenes were disturbing, but not scary.
Doom 3 is the same.

Farcry had its moments, like in the trigen levels where they randomly appear behind you.

Well, kinda off topic but I never thought that BioShock was a horror game? :D. Anyways, the scariest game I have played is Condmned:Criminal Origins. I really do not play too many horror genre but they give me the creeps bad. I just never liked being chased by some weird as creature.

FEAR was alright, however there was so much action. They did have the one moment parts where I crapped my pants but it was a fun game.

QUake IV, ah here and there.

Thief 3 Deadly Shadow, Shalebridge Cradle Level

You know, when you encounter the worst, in a game where your not even prepared  to face things like that o.0. Equipped with practically nothing to destroy the weird zombies, that walk and RUN very, but very damn fast. Thats just too awesome. Plus the music, the ambiance (beceause thats a stealth game, already, in these game, when something find you thats kinda terrifing, thats even worse when thats a god damn zombie. And I don't even talk about the location itself, insipired by the "frankeinstein's hospital" ruins.

Clive Barker's Undying had some pretty good "jump" moments. It wasn't really that terrifying though. To tell you the truth I've never really been that "scared" by a game or movie I've seen, though I have found some to be pretty creepy.

I don't really understand why everyone is dissing on F.E.A.R. though. I thought it had plenty of creepy and shocking moments. Maybe it's just because everyone else here has seen "The Ring" (which I understand F.E.A.R. totally rips off) and I haven't.

System Shock 2 is probably the best I've played when it comes to horror games with its phenomenal use of sound.

I don't play scary games but I heard my friend saying the Clive Barker's Undying was creepy... never got the guts to find out but when he said it was scary I'm talking about a guy who isn't bothered seeing ppl getting skewered in stakes like what happened with count dracula so I'm guessing it was scary... well for me... scariest has to be HL1... and ravenholm in Half life 2.... yea yea wtever it might not be scary for you but damn... the atmosphere was eerie

Aliens Vs Predator 2-The Marine Campaign, that first stage was scary as heck, even without Aliens in it.

The scariest level would be when Frosty tries to rescue that one girl, and then all the Aliens come out of the woodwork, and you have to make a mad dash to your APC.

F.E.A.R. Extraction Point was pretty freaky. Towards the end where you get into the hospital, the setting just gets so eerie and ghosts/monsters/whatever pop out at you. I actually had to stop playing for a while when I got there.

F.E.A.R - The game had perfect timing for the little girl to come in, also the invisible soldiers from extraction were always following me 0_o.

Doom 3 - Because no one likes to go into a dark room with zombies, trust me...

Carnivores 1 - I still don't understand how the raptors were always able to flank me, turning and having something jump at you isn't cool, and don't get me started on the T-rex

Most of the scary games are best at night with the sound up, which makes the game twice as scary.

I've played a lot of games, but I think the scariest one for me was the "We don't go to Ravenholm" chapter of Half-Life 2. The slightly cloudy sky, the moon, some street-lamps and a howling zombie rushing at me across the rooftops. The guys at VALVE did a great job there.

I'm going to take it back a few years... well, a decade. The 11th Hour scared the mess out of me then. Fear was okay. But after getting a taste of STALKER I think that will be the new scary game.
