There is no way Sony would want their products to basically blow up. That makes no logical sense. They would lose their entire fanbase. No fanbase = no customers. No customers = no $$$.

Latest update: http://community.eu.playstation.com/t5/PlayStation-Network/PSN-Connection-issues-error-8001050F/m-p/10313748#M126581

Update: 16:58

As you may be aware, some customers have been unable to connect to the PlayStation Network today. This problem affects the models other than the new slim PS3.

We believe we have identified that this problem is being caused by a bug in the clock functionality incorporated in the system.

Errors include:
* The date of the PS3 system may be re-set to Jan 1, 2000.
* When the user tries to sign-in to the PlayStation Network, the following message appears on the screen; "An error has occurred. You have been signed out of PlayStation Network (8001050F)".
* When the user tries to launch a game, the following error message appears on the screen and the trophy data may disappear; "Failed to install trophies. Please exit your game."
* When the user tries to set the time and date of the system via the Internet, the following message appears on the screen; "The current date and time could not be obtained. (8001050F)"
* Users are not able to playback certain rental video downloaded from the PlayStation Store before the expiration date.

We hope to resolve this problem within the next 24 hours. In the meantime, if you have one of the above listed models, we advise that you do not use your PS3 system, as doing so may result in errors in some functionality, such as recording obtained trophies, and not being able to restore certain data.

As mentioned above the new slim PS3 is not affected with this error. We are doing our best to resolve the issue and do apologise for any inconvenience caused.

For the latest status on this situation please keep an eye on this thread.

Well, glad they are talking at least. But, I find it funny they plan to resolve this in 24 hours... If users cannot connect to the PSN how will they download a firmware update? Users will need either a USB drive or blank CDs... which everyone might not have. What a massive PITA. Hopefully the problem will fix itself in the next 24 hours :)

As mentioned before, though, to update the PS3 via internet, it actually disconnects you from the PSN. So Sony would still be able to issue a patch effectively.

Why are we getting into a legal discussion?

GoBucks614

Because this could turn into a HUGE Class Action lawsuit.

It very well could. If this doesn't get settled very quickly, Sony should have to refund or replace. I would say the time this officially is a colossal problem is right around midnight GMT. If it is fixed by time lapse, then look for Sony to get a firmware patch solving the problem. If not, they really did nothing to solve the problem, and the same time next year, it could happen again.

What I don't get is why the fat PS3's decided to go ballistic to this extent this year and not other years around the imaginary Feb. 29 and why it's only the fat ones that are affected. I am really hoping that this problem is solved tonight at 7:00 PM. If not, there will be riots around the world.

Which one should I get?

  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
  • MAG

I already have COD 4 & 5, and I still play COD 4 online. Should I stick it out and wait for MAG to come out, or should I give in to Activision's reign over FPS's and get MW2? Has anyone played the beta for MAG?

Have you ran a connection test? Maybe its your actual internet that is the problem. If not...

I've been having the same trouble as you, I think. About 2 hours ago, I couldn't connect to the PlayStation Network (the internet itself was fine). I ran a test that showed me those results, so maybe the PlayStation server is down. To confirm these theories, I tried logging into the PlayStation Network from my PC, and I couldn't do that either. So maybe we'll just have to wait this one out until Sony figures it out.

You might not be pressing the buttons fast enough.  You have to go pretty fast and all of the buttons have to be correct or else you have to start all over.
