If it makes him feel any better, I prefer playing the Metal Gear series without killing anyone. I always found it more challenging and rewarding that way. Although I'm not against violence either as it can be a good stress relief, God of War comes to mind.
I always thought the 'Alien Resurrection' PSOne game was underrated. It had a great atmosphere with superb sound design. The game was also hard as nails. Aliens were fast and threatening, ammo was limited and scarce. Save points felt like gold as life was quite fragile. The pacing was a lot slower than normal fps games too, try to be a badass and you'll die quickly. For an old game, I think it did a lot of things right in capturing the fear and suspense of the films.
