Darkstalkers Resurrection fails to meet Capcom sales targets

Publisher admits it might have "misread" interest in the franchise.

by

Darkstalkers Resurrection hasn't managed to sell enough copies to be successful, Capcom has said.

The game, an HD compilation of Darkstalkers 3 and Night Warriors: Darkstalkers' Revenge, was released in March 2013 on Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network. Capcom senior vice president Christian Svensson took to the Capcom Unity forums to acknowledge that while the game had appeared in digital bestseller lists, it did not sell enough copies to be considered successful by the publisher.

When it was pointed out that the game appeared in the top 10 lists for the US PlayStation Store in March, Svensson replied that "sadly, it's not as high on that list as it really needs to be to be successful."

Capcom hopes to keep promoting the game over the coming months, however. "We're working on promotions and the like to improve the situation," said Svensson, admitting that Capcom might have misjudged the interest in the Darkstalkers license.

"We've not given up. But I'm disappointed in the opening sales response relative to any other fighting title we've put out on the same platforms given the frequency and urgency of requests we've had here over the last several years and the quality of the execution. It is the most fully featured and probably best project of this type we've done."

"And before people jump to the wrong conclusions, I'm not blaming fans who did buy it and supported the brand. I'm very thankful for those guys (thank you, to all of you). I'm more disappointed by my misread of the information in this particular case."

Darkstalkers Resurrection received a respectable score of 8.0 in its GameSpot review last month. For more information on the game, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

The game was well executed.  I especially like playing offline while being able to receive challenges to play online.   The problem is charging $15.00 for it.  $10.00 is more realistic,   since the Darkstalker series does not carry as much weight as Street Fighter or Marvel.  I'm glad  that I waited for the sale on Xbox live  for $10.00.  The other problem is that many people have purchased this game in one form or another in the past.   In my case,   it was my fourth time purchasing a Darkstalker game  (which also includes my import purchase of Darkstalkers 3 for the Sega Saturn.)

The fact that it was in the top ten list and still didn't meet Capcom's sales expectations says more about Capcom than anything.

It says they are dramatically over-reaching.  When a game makes the mediums current "best-seller" list and you still consider it a commercial failure, you need to bring your expectations back down to Earth just a little bit.

Interest is there you Capcom numb nuts, but the interest is in a NEW title with new ideas and new story. If you thought an updated rehash was going to cut you a quick buck then you need to reinstate Yoshinori Ono and give your CEO the Big Boss Boot!

It makes me sad to read all these whiny, sketchy and often outright misguided arguments about Dalkstalkers Resurrection and Capcom from the so called "fans".

For once you people should get a grip on how much a bug-free game for Xbox360 and PS3 actually costs to produce - even if it's just a true-to-the-original port with enhanced graphics, new artwork, a new interface, new story voice-overs,  an expansive tutorial-mode, a new achievement-system AND f***ing online-multiplayer.

Second, if this not-so-recent trend of games from Capcom failing to meet their sales expectations, there will be no Capcom and therefore no Capcom-Games like we used to know for much longer. Capcom will either focus on its home-market Japan - like many japanese developers and publishers have done so, not-so-recently either - or go bankrupt. It's as simple as that.

Third, if you now say "Capcom only released crap or the same shit over and over again in the past ten years, they are creedy bastards", i would like to point out the followering:

Excuse me, have you even played their games in the last ten years? Games like Power Stone, Viewtiful Joe, Killer7, Okami, Resident Evil 4 & 5, SF4, SFxT, MegaMan PoweredUp, MegaMan 9 & 10, Ultimate G'n'G, the DmC-Series, the new DmC, the Rising-Dead-Series, Bionic Commando, Lost Planet 1 & 2, Ghost Trick, Dragons Dogma, the Monster-Hunter-Series, Zack and Wiki, Tatsunoko VS Capcom, the Ace-Attorny-Series, the Onimusha-Series, Maximo, God Hand, Shadow of Rome, Dragons Dogma, P.N.03, Breath of Fire - Dragon Quarter?

All of these games were graphically outstanding(not seldom on the artistic side, too), had polished, thoughtful gameplay and were very fun to play. Many of them were actually new, quite risky franchises or reinvisioned old franchises, incorporating new concepts and directions - while keeping that tradional, wicked and special Capcom-Uniquess in their gameplay(even against the opinion of several critiques). Quite a fair share of them have bombed big time, commercially. Still Capom tried to establish more new game-series', through many different genres.

Fourth: How - after having read my post - can you still think of Capcom being just another lazy and greedy company, which isn't caring at all for their main constumer, the average Videogame-Enthusiast?

As in the end, it was you oh-so-sophisticated and demanding fans of Capcom and "great Video Games" and therefore not the industry alone, who - just like the average gamer - did not support amazing new concepts in graphics and gameplay, hence forcing developers stick to proven formulas and genres and ever more increasing budgets to support artistically bland but nevertheless expensive presentation.

Nah, we just want it on the marketplace because it's the only place EVERYONE knows it will be and not in some decent arcade somewhere like in the 90s.

That kinda sucks. To me, it makes sense to do a re-release of old fighting games in order to hype up interest for a new entry. I mean, you wouldn't want to make another game, and then have it bomb, right? They just can't pull a new game out of their butts if nobody is interested. Hence the compilation. I thought it would definitely sell well on PSN and XBLA, but sadly, it was not the case. Darkstalkers Resurrection seemed very ambitious in its goal to gauge up interest in a new game for the series. But, time will tell if it can happen.

Didn't they learn from MvC: Origins?

HaHa. the joke is on you Capcom for thinking fan nostalgia is enough to charge 1200ms points for a throwback. how's your jojo sales doing at 1600 ms points.

What the hell happened with that Darkstalkers teaser last year? No one wants to play the same damn game another damn time. We want a new game.

As awesome as this games were back in the day, the fact is that they have aged pretty bad, there is no point in owning this games over Persona 4 for example or even over Third Strike Online which it is a much better game. It was nice to have the brand revived even for a short period of time, but i don't see anymore Darkstalkers any time soon.

I find it funny the Capcom thinks the Darkstalkers series is anything other than a niche fighting game. The only iconic thing about darkstalkers is Morrigan and Felicia. Outside of that, no one really cares about the game.

they really need to stop making the same game over and over again. we get it, you can make 2D fighting games... make something new now.

Well I love DS but I will admit it's Sf's red headed brother. I do remember when Sf4 was being planned and talked about they said if Sf4 takes off they'll do a Darkstalkers in the style of Street fighter 4 and well...we got this..

They either need to give us something NEW or something thats not more money than the console you're playing on like a DEFINITIVE collection of SF and DS not the shit they release every anniversary.  Something like they did with the MM anniversary collection..one release all the games..ALL like the SF alpha series..why SFA2 gold is like the finding the holy grail is beyond me.

Seems to be a running theme with Japanese developers.  Like Square "we're losing money  on games...people REALLY fucking want a CT remake..I know another Lack Luster final fantasy should work.  Oh it didn't people are sick of FF? NAAAW!"

Actually I liked it's more like a running theme with developers.  they CLAIM to know what the player base wants...they deliver something from the Bizzaro world then wonder what went wrong.  EA, Ubi, BW, Capcom, Konami (really it's that hard to get castlevania right..it's your fucking IP), Nintendo, Blizzard etc.

IP's don't need a reboot the industry does.

TheCyborgNinja
TheCyborgNinja

That sucks. I guess nobody likes it as much as I do. I dropped $30 on the Japanese disc version.

The problem with it is an overpriced digital version and a lack of any compelling new content. It's hardly SSFIITHDR. A real test would be to release a "Street Fighter vs. Darkstalkers" game. It's a safe bet because of the SF tie-in, and it would appease the DS fans.

Redblaze27

This was sadly expected, because people are not buying this version in protest because its neither a new game or a version of Darkstalkers 3 with all the characters (something non-FGC players care about).

Hello its not a new game but a game that has already been out for who knows how long it might be a compilation of all the Darkstalker games but its nothing really new about it now if it were a remake and it looked something like the latest mortal kombat game that midway came out with you might get better results, they pulled the same thing with Final Fight Double impact interesting name sounds like a brand new final fight but its just Final Fight 1 and some dungeon fighting game point is these games are not new and gamers look for new and improved so get off yo azz and stop trying to bring out stuff that people have already played and you expect for it to still sell like its something people have not seen before all you should be concerned with is remake or new remake or new one more time remake or new, that's like nintendo with the 3DS people bought a 3DS for high resolution 3D games and you re release games like black and white game boy dont get me wrong i am down for the classics but i mean come on are you really trying to play a black and white original game boy game on a 3DS.

Screw it. You know what? I blame Call of Duty, period. That franchise is killing the gaming industry because every game company now expects Call of Duty numbers. That series is overrated and shallow.

I wish the military FPS craze would just fade out.

Capcom ported the games over from their PS2 release, Vampire: Darkstalkers Collection, (just as they did Third Strike) not straight from the arcade releases. This was their opportunity to not just release an arcade perfect port (really a port of a near arcade perfect port tweaked to be more arcade perfect), but to also release the arranged version from the same PS2 release with additional characters and bugfixes that has still yet to make it outside Japan. They didn't make it clear they had no intention of doing so until long after they would've gauged interest in DSR and that was a deal breaker for many.

No company is more deserving of the moniker crapcom. I honestly think this was just a ploy so they could pretend to fans they made an effort, but shut down any hopes of Darkstalkers permanently.

@Strider8009 Bingo. Lower the price and more people will buy it (like me) helping to make it turn a bigger profit. Capcom continues to whine after they pushed their core audience away with their BS DLC.

@CecilChups if SF games don't sell in call of duty numbers, capcom obviously released this game knowing the game wouldn't sell in those #s either, also knew it wasn't going to sell as much as SF does but they still released it. they thing is, apparently the game has basically not sold at all. apparently the online battles are dead and this game just got released. it just didn't sell.
