I just spoke with Dell a nd they said the XPS 9000's PSU can be upgraded with standard AXT PSU's. If I upgrade the PSU to like 700 Watts, are there any other concerns that I need to worry about (ie heat or anything)? Thanks.

Does anyone have a current XPS 9000 who knows if you can upgrade the power supply? I haven't gotten mine in the mail yet so I can't check. If I can't I can at least try to cancel in advance.

Well I can still return the Dell if need be. It'll just be a nuisance.

I assume ATX PSU's are the standard ones that are easy to replace?

Also, if I do decide to return the Dell and build a comp on my own, what kind of technical skills do I need and how long will it take?

Thanks.

[QUOTE="kidcool189"]i highly doubt that dell made it so that the psu couldnt be upgraded, i never heard of something like that, although ive never really dealt with pre build branded pc's before. you'll just have to crack your pc open and see for yourself if u can take it out of there...im sure you'll be able tooMaoTheChimp

Dell sometimes puts proprietary PSU's in their systems which makes it difficult to upgrade the PSU.

Is there any way of findin gout if the XPS 9000 has the proprietary PSU?

That's fine insofar as I don't mind paying for a new PSU. However, I've heard that Dell's have some crazy PSU wiring that make it impossible to replace your PSU. That may just be for old Dell's (I hope so).

But I'm really concerned because I'm happy with the system for now, but if I've bought one that has such a huge limit on future upgrades, I need to return it while I still can. Thanks again.

Yeah, you're right about Dell's naming system. It's stupid. The GTS 240 is just a renamed Nvidia 9800 GT. From what I can tell, I should be able to play most current games as well as I'd like. However, I want to make sure that I can upgrade the Video Card in the future since that is one of its weakest parts.

Now I'm concerned about A) what the best Video Card upgrade I couldcurrently get with the 475 Watt Power supply and B) if I can upgrade the PSU on this model.

[QUOTE="fincavigia"]

I just got a Dell XPS 9000

i970(2.66ghz)

8GB Ram

Nvidia 240 GTS 1024MB

475 Watt Power Supply

1. What are my options to upgrade the video card at its current wattage?

2. I've read some places that you can't upgrade your PSU with Dells. Is this still true (with the XPS 9000)?

Any advice would be very much appreciated. I can still return this comp (and take a hit on a fee) if I can't upgrade the GPU.

UltimateGamer95

Can you tell us more specs on the PSU? Such as how much voltage it has on the 12 volt rails.

Unfortunately, I can't seem to find it. However, whatever the standard Dell XPS 9000 PSU is - that's what I have.
