Well, welcome to the world of serious games then.
Console games are certainly fun and I do play them occasionally, but as to large scale and complicated games .. I have yet to see a mach for the PC.
I've got a low end system at the moment, upgrading next month. I've got a Pentium 4 3,0 GHz, 1GB of ram, GF 7600 GS and I played stalker with medium settings. Such a system could be aquired for 200$ I suppose or less.
PC-gaming real is cheap, even the games are at least twice cheaper if not even cheaper.
As to reccomendations, I for one am a sim-fan. So, I'd reccomend Microsoft Flight Simulator X which I proudly own too. Hell of a detailed "game" with exhilarating missions and all.
But HL2, sure! Play, praise and love it. It is a fascinating experience. But yes, wait for the orange box. Most certainly try stalker aswell. It is really innovative and with nice atmosphere.
And... somewhere I heard a question, why don't we hear about numbers like 720p, 1080p or alike on the PC? Why because these standards have little meaning on the PC. My monitor is running 2048x1536@85Hz resolution and it could take on the burden of a 320x240 resolution aswell and everything in between.
And yes, PC's can handle 1080p for your 40'' (example) TV.
