Main characters who were antagonists in the series generally act as "bosses" in these chapters, and they try to reproduce the special conditions you had in the show. For example, Shingo is one of the early bosses you have to face and he's the first "Gum Tape Deathmatch" race you have to do in the game. Obviously your hand isn't really taped to the wheel, but the game puts a meter on the screen that limits how far you can turn and if you go outside the meter for too long you automatically lose the race. There's a lot of other stuff spread throughout the story mode. Sometimes you have to race in someone else's car, like when Takumi takes on some random challengers in Itsuki's AE85. There's another story mode mission where you have to drive Akina Downhill with one of the Speed Stars (Koichiro?) and build an excitement meter by drifting. You do this over and over until he faints.
Okay, that is just super cool, way above what I'd expect. I never imagined they'd take the challenging concepts from the anime and turn them into game features - the devs must obviously be fans of the show, otherwise I don't see how you could come up with details like that. And yeah, that might well be Iketani you have to drive, that's who it is in the anime, omg xD. Great episode, so much fun!
In one of the later missions I had to race against Takumi at night. He was pretty close behind me when suddenly he vanished. He didn't show up on the mini-map and the distance to opponent meter went blank. I thought I was winning, when suddenly he appeared out of nowhere and blew past me to win the race. I had no clue what had happened, and when I tried the race again the same thing happened. Someone else explained to me that he turned off his headlights to sneak past, which apparently was a plot element from an episode of the show in a later season I hadn't seen yet.
So the only way you know what's going on is if you've seen the anime (and connect the dots) or had someone else explain it to you? That's a bit harsh xD Still, pretty cool feature, and a brilliant way of tying the anime into the game. Enough games just use the anime as a starting point and then veer off in a wild direction that's only mildly reminiscent of what the anime would do.
So how do you beat Takumi and his no-lights feature? Do you sway from side to side to prevent him from passing? :D
