@Gravelord_Nito @digiMyth No, of course there's nothing wrong with mentioning male misrepresentation here but that doesn't negate the previous points about women or become an argument for why women should shut up about it.

And the argument that if women want change they should design games themselves and get more into the industry has a few flaws:

1. Most women aren't willing to matyr themselves in an industry as feminists the same way the author is willing.

2. Even if more women are in the industry it won't necessarily mean women representations get any better. Think of your own point on how you are dissatisfied with a lot of male representation in film and TV series. An industry dominated also by men.

What we have to realise is that this is not a competition of who suffers the most. Or who can bear it silently. We are talking about gender stereotypes and how they are invasive and how ANYBODY, both men and women, can feel alienated by them.

It is not a competition for who is the most hard-done by.

@tom_cat_01 @Gravelord_Nito Well said. I admire your stamina with um... the Lord.

I feel a lot of opinions here fall into the the category of rejecting these articles on the basis of overt victimisation. This a horribly shallow interpretation of what's going on. Common guys why does it hurt so much to hear women vent? Especially about topics no less than how we treat them.

If someone is being beaten to the ground in a fight and is raising their hands saying stop stop, do we just sit idly on the sideline's and say "get up and fight, you're playing the victim". Perhaps they don't throw uppercuts for a living. So what we wish of them is based on our own insecurities to do anything about it. We could also yell 'stop'. Maybe if enough of us did the persecutors would heed. This is just an example - metaphorically I don't think the situation is as malicious as this but the level of apathy and denial about women's treatment in games is certainly just as potent.

@PlusFour I agree with you that it's probably more a case of not applying in the first place. I feel that the reason for this though is more to do with lack of support and validation in the industry than anything else.

I'm sure women, like men, judge the industry on the kinds of games/products published - not to mention the kind of marketing that goes with that. A marketing to males. And what do they see in this marketing? Unfortunately many of the AAA games which hold massive market share have violent and misogynistic content in their campaigns. Hardly the sort of beacon light that welcomes women into the industry.

And hopefully if more articles like Carolyn's reach designers ears and are in fact heeded... then she is very much in the development of games.

Good luck in your studies ;)

@PlusFour I'm sure many women would love to get into the game industry if they could. But even if they don't it doesn't mean that we can't better the way we represent women in games.

Besides is the author herself not in the game industry? She is a video game journalist is she not? And she plays games and can't have a valid desire for the industry? Or is being in the industry only relegated to people that know C++?

@Gravelord_Nito @digiMyth Yes but the topic at hand is not about male representation. It's about female representation. If you feel hard-done by because this space did not dissovle into a discourse about that then you're missing the point.

@Gravelord_Nito @DiamondSlicer It's not as simple as that. Women are excluded from many industries by many factors, political and social.

@Gravelord_Nito @digiMyth Did you not realise that's why I said "men also have a problem representing themselves in games, film and other media"?
