Had some really epic battles in Planetside, most of them being defenses against a numerically superior forces. ANT lifts into heavily zerged bases were fun as well.

WoW character naming was a lot more fun when PvP titles were put in game. Could turn a relatively normal name into something, well, different, like Private Parts or Corporal Punishment...

Planescape: Torment.thusaha

The best.

While only one can be the best, there are still those worthy of mention:

VtM: Bloodlines (basically, all of them, since it had a few)

Baldurs Gate 2: Throne of Baal

Deus Ex

Deus Ex 2

Planescape: Torment has so far had the best story and most interesting characters. There will quite probably never be anything like it made tho, considering the game had more text than the LoTR trilogy put together, twice :)

It's not everyones cup of tea (especially during these seemingly ADHD driven times where most games are designed for people with 5 minute attention spans) but it most definitely is mine. Heartily recommend it (but try the demo first).

I'll throw down the name Deus Ex here (I and possibly II, though I has more RPGish elements to it).

Also, some adventure games are good fun (Monkey Island and Grim Fandango from the previous post are excellent examples).

S.T.A.L.K.E.R has way better atmosphere and an actual storyline and that is why it's a clear winner in this contest for me.

Or did you mean that all character data needs to be stored on the server and not the client? Erlkoenig

Yes.
