I've been reading all of your comments and it all sounds like rainbows and lollipops to me.
My PS3 has been overheating and shutting down by it's self, it's kept in a cool area and in know for a fact that the fan is working after doing a test on it (holding down the eject button)
HOLDING DOWN THE EJECT BUTTON JUST BEFORE YOU RE-CONNECT THE AC CORD AND CONTINUE TO DO SO WHILE THE AC CORD HAS BEEN CONNECTED/ IS CONNECTED AUTOMATICALLY STARTS A 'FAN CLEANING' FUNCTION.
the fan spins ultra fast in the opposite direction designed to blow out excess dust.
After holding down the eject button and clearing some dust (I also used a low powered vaccume cleaner simultaniously where the vent's are on the back) it's seems my PS3 does no longer over heat and shut down.
However i do still need to completely confirm by keeping my PS3 on for a much longer period of time.
Playstation designed this to fix clogged up fans and overheating.
