When I install a larger hard drive, I take out the smallest one in my system and throw it into an external enclosure (eSATA usually).

As for your plugging in/unplugging, then sure you could, though, if it's not sATA, then each time you put it back in, you'll need to remind Windows that it's been installed. The sATA drives can even be hotswapped if you really want to poke around in your machine while it's on.

Yah, I actually misinterpreted the price of the E6600 which is actually $370 cdn. I guess I've been an AMD man for the last few years and I'm curious to try out the Conroes, but I'm a little adverse to paying the price of entry in that game. Even an E6300 seems to be about $50 more than a 4800+ AMD X2 chip? Performance wise, for gaming mostly, wouldn't I just be better off saving the money? My GPU card (7900GT) isn't the most cutting edge anymore, so that would probably be the weak point in a "gaming" rig. Also, in my experience, AMD chips seemed to run cooler which would be beneficial for a quieter system. I would prefer a Conroe, but I don't to overpay for a little extra performance?

My case (check out my sig) is extremely quiet and you wouldn't think that there are 4 fans that are constantly on. If you want a quiet computer, don't get a 10K rpm hard drive like i did (love the performance, hate the noise).spierdalaj666
Dang, I was going to go for a 140 gig Raptor :( I've heard conflicting reports on the noise generated by them. Some people said even though they spin faster, the magnitude of noise is not much greater. Yah, I've looked at that Asus board and that chip. My only issue is that that chip comes in at ~$250 Cdn and that board is $250 Cdn. Is the Conroe really that much better than getting an AMD X2 AM 3800+ for $140 and a mobo for $120? $500 vs. $260? Is the Conroe worth the $240 difference?

Hey all, it's time for me to get a new pc. With my last pc, I didn't pay much attention to making it quiet. It has 3 hard drives, $2 80mm fans x 4, stock GPU cooling, stock CPU cooling, and a mobo with fan cooling.

What I'm looking for is a case that's quiet, fanless mobo, 120mm fans, quiet PSU, quiet CPU cooling solution, quiet GPU cooling solution.

The only things I'm taking from my old system is the 7900Gt and 2 of the hard drives.

What I'm looking at:

Case

ANTEC Solo no PSU

or

Antec Sonata II w/PSU

PSU

Vantec Quiet PSU

MOBO

ASUS M2N

CPU HEATSINK

Ninja Heatsink

Now, not having built a "quiet" pc before, I am open to whatever suggestions people might have. I'll be sure to use screws with rubber and try and make sure that all mounting points have rubber involved.

Overall, my main concerns are heat and vibration noise, I suppose. I'm probably looking at getting an AMD AM2 X2 chip, though, I'm eager to try and get a Conroe E6600, but I've yet to figure out a good motherboard for the Conroe (so suggestions there would be nice as well).

Basically, anyone who has built a quiet pc lately, I'm open to your suggestions. I'm not attached emotionally to any parts involved, so if you have other suggestions feel free. Money is not really an object, but keep it reasonable, I'd like to keep it under $1000 which should be fair considering I already have my GPU.

Do you think it's a good idea to get a UPS for my PC (and other electronic devices)? There's no real problem with my electricity in my house though.

I'm thinking of getting this, since it's on sale at Bestbuy

APC UPS

Any ideas?

GRiMeY

Yup, those are pretty good. Those are the ones I buy for work and few other IT guys who have come through for other installations have used that one as well. They work well and are a decent price. I also use a ****** one at home where my power isn't the cleanest. Works well: ****** UPS

Edit: One issue with my ****** was that it didn't like the surge that resulted from a CRT monitor starting up. So my CRT (which is aging) is just attached to the surge protection and my nice new LCD is attached to the UPS.  The APC ones at work run very well under a heavy load, so I'd suggest those.

Hmm...I wonder if MS would bother? They got a little burned when they purchased Rare. Remember, a publisher/game studio is only as good as their last title. Maybe an option would be to purchase Take Two, and then sell off the properties that it has no interest in? Though, somehow, I don't think MS cares "that" much.

I don't get why it is rare.Genuma
Because not a lot were manufactured. Look at games like Disgaea, etc...hard to find = rare.

Yah, I bought it as well because I'd heard so many good things about it. I think I paid about $30 for it, used. I just couldn't get into it, either. It's quirky, but I just couldn't get any fun out of it.

but what i want is a intergrated wifi.mi6ops
Screw integrated wifi. I have no desire for that. I tried wifi and it definitely doesn't keep up with streaming video from my pc. It's worth the time to run a wire to your machine, even if that means drilling into the wall, etc...

Some people have far too much time on their hands. Me, when I get home, usually I don't work hard on expressing my "fanboyish" attitude to the world.
