You know what, I think I finally understand it. All you need to do to generate sales and receive praise is create a game that will pull on a person's emotions just a little, and they will praise it to no end no matter what gameplay elements the game uses. Also factor in a huge budget and you got yourself a GOTY.
Seriously, this is not how gaming should be. Just because a person's emotions are rustled does not mean the game is a masterpiece. if that's what you want don't play videogames, go watch a movie or read a book, they do better jobs. Games should be about gameplay first, and everything else second. Take pic related for instance, if you take the story away what do you have? same with Bioshock Infinite. A game should not have to ride on its story for it to be considered good.
My question is is when did this downward spiral start and who the hell thought it was a good idea to make games into movies with gameplay?
@Weskerzx95 Metacritic score doesn't mean crap when most of the reviewers are biased idiots who only care about story and cinematic handholding. Also, you shouldn't trust reviews if they come out long before the game is released.
