@WiiMan21 Do you not listen to politicians speak? They all sound like that. Oh yes, we all get indignant rage when they go after something we care about. But hey, as long as they're going after those other guys, we'll happily vote for them and cheer them on.

We only get the government we deserve.

@Meteor7 Short time? This guy will hold office until he retires or decides to set his sights higher than state legislature. Most of his constituency will never hear about this, won't care, or will cheer him on. It will be like the war on rock music. It will continue until your average 50-something grew up on the stuff.

I am actually very curious about how Nvidia plans to distribute their upcoming system. Nvidia as a company is heavily focused on R&D and licensing which leaves most manufacturing, marketing, and distribution to partners such as Asus and EVGA. So the question is will one of their existing partners or multiple partners distribute the system? Though Harrison's question about manufacturing is silly. It'll probably be made by Foxconn like most consumer electronics and Nvidia products.

The government has already commissioned studies on violent video games in the past. What is the point of this? The only one I can come up with is that they want to be seen as doing something, anything about the tragedy and this is the only path that doesn't piss off any lobby groups they care about.

Iwata shows a lack of understanding here. Companies such as EA and Square have proven that people will buy $10, $15, even $30 smartphone games if they feature established franchises and quality game play.

The big thing, however, is giving up the opportunity to promote Nintendo games and franchises by dismissing the smartphone market. Nintendo sold the NES to my generation by getting Mario in our faces everywhere. Now you have a new generation growing up with easy access to their parents' smartphones and tablets who can more easily ignore that Mario exists.

This late in development a change in the art director isn't going to have a significant effect. Usually most of that work is finished six months prior to release for a AAA title. More likely to affect DLC, which would likely be in planning phase at this point.

I disagree with his assessment. Studios who were unable to keep up with AAA game development this generation would not have been better served by having a new generation of consoles already. Console game budgets and development cycles will only continue to increase as expectations rise. The growth of the mobile and web platforms is more similar to the growth of indie game development and would have occurred regardless of the decisions Sony and Microsoft have made as those platforms have matured in the past few years.

His one really good point is that future consoles need to be simple to develop for. We're long past the age where programmers write games at the hardware level. The PS3's Cell processor is generally wasted as games today are designed for the lowest common denominator between it and the 360.

@jimbothef The problem I have with this whole story is that you can't make a triple A MMO on $75 million. You're going to need at least twice that. It seems like a possible combination of 38 Studios failing to secure more investors and a publisher plus an administration that appears to want to score political points by choosing losers in this case.

The quotes from Governor Chafee that I've read on Gamespot lead me not to trust him, so I'm more inclined to believe 38 Studios at this point. Lumping the blame entirely on Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is entirely dishonest as the game did well and was most decidedly not a failure.

The majority of the $75 million loan was going towards the MMO that was in development. The only sane reason that the state of Rhode Island, as the primary investor, would choose to withdraw is if the MMO itself was looking to be a failure. By instead making a scapegoat of Reckoning, I can only assume that Governor Chafee is attempting to pull the wool over the peoples' eyes.
