I honestly can't tell if Sony has gone insane or not. Sure, backwards compatability may not matter to most people, and those that it does matter to will probably have most of their games they want to play playable on day one. But, still, I just can't see why ANYONE would want to give money to Sony and reward them for their actions. Ever since E3 2006, it's been one, long, downhill road. The only games they have going for them are Metal Gear Solid, Devil May Cry, and Final Fantasy. I'm not a fan of any of them, so I don't know too much about them, but I do know that Metal Gear Solid and Final Fantasy are both made by third-party developers. That means that, even if they're loyal to Sony, they could theoretically switch sides and start making Wii/360 games. Sony has been loosing exclusives left and right, and they're doing absolutely NOTHING about it. I mean, just think for a second. What if MGS4 goes to the 360? What if FF does? What if Blu-Ray flops, and HD-DVD (or even DVD9) wins? Sony is putting ALL their money on third-party developers and a new media format that may or may not come out on top. If they loose MGS, FF, or the Blu-Ray/HD-DVD war, just ONE of those, then I can't see a single way they'll retain their position as top dog. It's bad enough they lost games like Assassin's Creed and UT3 (it's on PC too, but they lost console exclusivity). But as of right now, they have so little going for them, and so little going against them. And then, as if this was actually suprising for Sony fans, they go back on yet ANOTHER promise, and one that ISN'T just going to delay the PS3. This time they're actually TAKING AWAY FEATURES of the PS3 for the PAL audience. Have they gone COMPLETELY insane? I mean, sure, it's only backwards compatability, but what's to stop them now? If they can get away with this, they'll know that the PAL audience will take ANYTHING from them. They already tolerate delays and higher prices, now they have to tolerate an actual LOSS of a FEATURE of the PS3 that the North American/Japan audience ALREADY HAS? As I said, I find it hard to believe that Sony hasn't gone completely insane. I wouldn't be suprised if they said that the PAL PS3's won't ship with an online component, and instead of motion-sensing in the SixAxis, they put back in the rumble. Sony has just lost it. SF

Excellent picks, GS staff. 2007 will be a very, VERY good year in gaming. SF

I'm hoping for $199, but thinking it'll be $249. For some reason a mid- to late-October release date sounds right, although common sense tells me it's more likely to be early November. I'd say 10-15 games, mostly because of Ubisoft. SF
