This gives me a mixed feeling. While I understand you want to protect the minors, limiting it won't help. Kids can be more creative and follow other sources, like the internet, friends or even family. If you limit one thing, you're gonna eventually have to limit the rest: internet, tv, music and other media.
What we really can do is, as you say "be less reckless" and wonder what we are actually doing. As for the minors, they need guidance, not censorship. Kids will eventually be exposed to the unpleasant things in life and the only way to help them is to prepare them of what they might bump into. They need to understand.
As for violence, it is indeed possible to make something entertaining that doesn't purely focus on violence. Take the Deus Ex games for example. While violence is part of the game, you do not necessarily have to follow it, as there are other ways to beat the game/have fun.
Oh, yes we have. This is about our form of entertainment. We play games so we can have fun. Yes, fun. Not every single one of us are bloodthirsty mongrels who then turn to society when games can't give our "fix" anymore.
I'm very sure that everyone here is shocked of what happened in Newtown. I do believe that, if we could, we would have prevented it. But you won't solve this problem by blaming it on games, by blaming it on us.
The only way you can find why this tragedy has happened is by looking into the mind of the one who did this. It's not easy, but such things never are. You will not solve this problem by picking an "obvious" scapegoat.
